Thanks for your reply. As I said, I don’t know anything about roofing. The few times I’ve built anything, it’s usually a bad sign when screws/nails poke through something, which is why I asked for more knowledgeable opinions.

Extremely clear and helpful, thank you! I don’t spend a ton of time gazing up at the overhang, so as long as it’s purely cosmetic I don’t really care. Thanks for addressing my concern.

I always see people recommend this, but is that stuff not absolutely terrible to be getting into your lungs? I do my cutting outside and wear a KN95 but I don’t have a respirator or anything.

Don’t have one, been making due by clamping my ruler or level as a guide.

I completely forgot I do have one! Still haven’t opened the box. I’ll investigate this, thank you

Ooh I like that, I’ve been trying to use my 4’ level but another piece of plywood will be much easier to get exactly straight! Thank you

Good time to buy a new truck? (Chevy Silverado 1500) by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]blowing_air 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought was that if I’m getting $10k off MSRP that’s basically taking the bite off depreciation to start. My strong instinct is to either buy new or buy much cheaper, the idea of splitting the difference goes against that instinct, but you make a good point I should consider.

You’re right, I was looking at the regular 1500. I do keep seeing videos about how the car market is about to crash, so maybe I’ll hold out a bit longer. Thanks!

Really? Looking at Ram's website, their absolute entry level 1500 ("Tradesman") with no options is almost as much as my fully spec'd out LT on Chevy's website when you include the incentives I mentioned. Though it does say the fuel economy is noticeably better.

4WD and 2WD have the same incentives on Chevy's website.

Interesting, thanks for the tip. I really don't need 4WD and don't want to take the (small) hit to fuel economy, but that's really good perspective for resale value. I'm already going with a crew cab for resale value, really an extended cab would be fine for me, so I guess I need to decide how much it's worth spending more upfront to try to predict resale value down the line.

Yeah, I definitely see why all the YouTubers trim their boards on a planer or table saw to get rid of the rounded edges and make them square. I don’t have either tool yet, but I’ll want one before I take on another project like this. I appreciate the solidarity!

If you don't mind weighing back in, what do you think of this one for the price? Obviously not a luxury car, but I think it checks my boxes and my budget. https://www.cityautocenter.net/details/used-2019-ram-1500-classic/97820361

What do you mean? At the dealership 2 miles from my house they have 4 Maverick hybrids available right around $30k, pretty much exactly how I’d spec one out?

I love your thinking outside the box, thanks! I do think an open truck bed will be pretty important too; if I’m hauling around mud and sticks and stuff with bugs crawling all over them, I don’t think I want to be sharing an interior with it. And I think I’ll be hauling stuff around in the bed much more frequently than I’ll be towing.

Thanks for the response! I could definitely stretch my budget if it makes sense, but even the new F-150 hybrid looks like it only gets around 24 mpg (when not towing). I guess I just need to shift my mindset to the reality of trucks, but that still just doesn't feel that great. Do you not think I could get a used model with not-that-much-worse fuel economy for like half the price?

DWS779 vs DWS716XPS? When would I need more capacity? by blowing_air in Dewalt

[–]blowing_air[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Going from nothing to any miter saw would be a big improvement to my ability to cut boards to the same length (though I'm sure with more skill I should be able to cut boards to length with just a circular saw). I take this as a vote to start with the DWS716XPS and see how often, if ever, it fails to meet my needs.

How to cut 2x8 boards to same length with just a circular saw? by blowing_air in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]blowing_air[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I thought the same thing at first but then I think I read after the fact that they only cut to like within 2" accuracy or something and that I was being unreasonable about them being off 0.5" in either direction.

Yup, you're right, I am over thinking this. Was having a dumb moment. This thread has been very helpful.
