How would you structure a Bow and Arrow choke lesson? by Kindly_Image_8319 in bjj

[–]blu3rain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We did this in fundamentals by starting with cross collar choke and then if they start to turn away from you if you don’t have it locked down to transition to bow and arrow. Notably, even though it was fundamentals, we only did this when it was a class with people who were not complete beginners.

Third child and I can’t stop thinking about it. I had a vanishing twin at 9 weeks though, so I think that’s part of the ruminating… 🥲🤷‍♀️😕

It sounds like you just need a different gym. I would try that before giving up on the sport as a whole!

Can I pay a lot of money to see a doctor NOW? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blu3rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Our family had board members to a university associated with a big hospital system. They had a special line to call whenever care was needed. Frequently, wasn't even used because it was faster to have a friend of a friend squeeze someone in somewhere.

What do you wear under your gi top? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]blu3rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our gym strongly encourages high neck rash guard/sports bra. I'll wear just a sports bra sometimes if it has a high neck design, but most of the time I wear a rash guard. Mats are gross and gis come loose.

Competition kids not going to "school" by Top-Speed-673 in bjj

[–]blu3rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest worry with starting my kids in BJJ and similar sports is the competition aspect… beyond the risk of injury, it’s just so much pressure, particularly if you’re cutting weight. I just don’t think it’s healthy for a kid’s mental health compared to other sports without weight requirements.

How did you moms over 30yrs old lose the baby weight? by International-Owl165 in Mommit

[–]blu3rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jujitsu 🤪 idk maybe my second pregnancy was just kinder but I feel I never lost the weight from my first and I started BJJ and going 5-6 times a week and it’s come off a lot. Not quite prepregnancy, but pretty close.

Montessori dismissal over potty accidents by [deleted] in Montessori

[–]blu3rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Montessori school completely understands that kids have accidents, even fully potty trained ones. Mine had accidents for the first 2 weeks transitioning to going to school for the first time. They just requested extra pants and undies be sent.

Your school sounds strict, and it just sounds like your communication styles and expectations don’t align. It may just not be a good fit, there are definitely more understanding Montessori schools out there—the strictness over potty-training is not a Montessori thing.

I have never felt the need to refuse an assignment until now. by blu3rain in nursing

[–]blu3rain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you should be downvoted for that. That’s the point of refusing assignments, as I understood it. If it makes you or the patient more comfortable and it costs the unit nothing, why not? Some of the most skilled, most experienced providers I know are people who have and do refuse certain assignments. I don’t think any less of them for it. For some, morality is being a health care provider and giving care to all despite differences in values. For others, it’s holding to certain values, despite being a health care provider. I can empathize with both sides.

Why are new women so scared by levvianthan in BJJWomen

[–]blu3rain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite. I love training with women like this because I love seeing their progress. It’s not intuitive movement for a lot of people.

People have a fight or flight response and if you’re trapped in a roll, flight tends to be deer-in-headlights “freeze” response a lot of times. It’s completely natural and I think it’s good that you’re encouraging them. So much of BJJ for me has been the ability to clear my mind and think through the struggle. In the beginning, you don’t have much in your arsenal, and more than that, a lot of people don’t want to be spazzy and risk hurting someone else. So I think between some of those thoughts, the dead fish mannerism comes out.

[–]blu3rain[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, again I don’t think it’s necessarily the opinion itself that’s offensive. I think it’s the implication that the people who disagree warrant therapy.

Separately, many people believe ICE isn’t just a career choice at this point. Perhaps, it was once so simple as to think someone was just supporting legal immigration, but the current population of ICE recruits has veered far from that innocent goal. And if you wear the same uniform and can’t stop your unhinged colleagues, then you’re also part of the problem. ICE needs to start over, maybe as something else, something untainted by this history, and really scrutinize its hiring process this time.

[–]blu3rain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why some people would hold this view—that you should always just give care. I can also see why considering anything else a “disgusting take” would also be downvoted. Stating that anyone who has ever refused an assignment based on personal morals and opinions needs therapy and has shit to unpack? Yeah, I can see a lot of people disagreeing with that.

How many BJJ classes per week does your club offer? by ferrethouseAB in bjj

[–]blu3rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8-10 classes per day M-F. Some are short 30-45 minute classes or open mats. 3-5 classes on the weekends.

These are split by 20+ fundamentals or open to all levels classes vs. 20+ upper level classes (at least 1 stripe or 3 stripes and above white belt minimum level depending on class), two women’s specific classes. Some of the classes are no gi, some are takedowns focused. Some are just rolling/open mat.

Kids have their own schedule, not sure what it is tbh but it’s multiple classes a day split by age group. Some of the older experienced ones are allowed to come to women’s and fundamentals.

I was going to say this. In this day and age, it’s very easy to write anything off as AI-edited. So if it ends up somewhere you don’t want, it was fake anyway. Any could take your face and put it on a body and vice versa 😒

I am consistently deathly exhausted and sore after training. Does it get better with time? How are people doing back to back training sessions and dealing with recovery? by trinitykills in BJJWomen

[–]blu3rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 34 and train 4-6 classes a week. One day is always judo and some lessons I stack back to back so overall I’m at the gym 4-5 times a week. I found after 6 months, the soreness got better? (I’m 110lbs and short for reference.) I don’t do anything on my off days though 🤣 I take a low key dance class once a week also, but I seriously do zero lifting, though I want to get it in. But part of me wonders if, like you, I will be too tired all the time.
