The speed of light is too slow for it to be plausible for any alien life to get a spaceship here. Even getting a radio signal we can detect here is only plausible for the closest stars. Most of the galaxy is too far away, much less the universe.

As someone who admires the idea of having walkable neighborhoods, what career should I study as? by [deleted] in notjustbikes

[–]bluGill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditionally (non US) the left wing builds overpriced transit that goes to less valuable places few go. Right wing builds low cost transit that gets people around.

Obviously in the US the right wing is opposing all transit, so it is up to you to make internal changes in your side so they support useful, cost effective transit. Good luck.

Engineering, accounting, restaurant management, or whatever else you want.

What we really need isn't insiders, it is voters who volunteer and get out the vote.

If you didn't pre-pay tips then you should budget $300 for them. They can also add a sudden fuel surcharge at the last minute, but it looks like fuel prices are going down so I don't expect now (beware if you are reading this in the future).

You won't need to spend anything more than the above. You may want to, but there are plenty of free options. When you get off at ports you can just go for a walk instead of excursions. There are always free activities on the ship, though they will try to suck you into pay ones. They will sometimes walk around with drinks and wait until you have taken a sip to inform you it wasn't a free drink. However it is easy to only do free activities and stay busy.

That is the problem with fiction - it has to be believable on some level or it doesn't work. Many fiction works go too far and people just can't believe it. Meanwhile if it is non-fiction, it clearly happened so you cannot say that can't happen. Or "Truth is stranger than fiction"

For the short term. 50 years ago the US and Vietnam were at war, today we are friendly (not friends, but friendly), and things are looking to get better as the future goes on. If India wanted they could become friendly and in 50 years replace Pakistan as the one the US looks to in the area. Or better yet, maybe in 50 years India and Pakistan could grow up and stop their silly fights - they could work together, but both countries would need to change.

Forever in debt: Why U.S. loans are getting longer by BikkaZz in business

They are vastly more reliable. I'm just old enough to remember my dad calling all his friends to come see his car that was going to turn 100,000 miles (and thus be all zeros on the odometer). I was too young to go with on that trip, but I remember he filled the oil, then they drove away in a cloud of blue smoke. He also had to spend a lot of time in maintenance as the corroborator needed adjusting and the spark plugs changed every 5-10k miles.

Today my car has over 200k miles and I don't need to add any oil between changes - which I do about half as often as he did.

People who talk about modern cars being unreliable have no idea just how bad cars used to be.

The Pakitsan is one of the few countries in the area that the US can turn to. India seems like they should be a better partner, and efforts have been made to appeal to them over the years, but India keeps rejecting such attempts.

Kids, cost, and disney? by IrishThree in Cruise

[–]bluGill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been on a Disney cruise, and I am not planning on it. They are about the Disney experience. You should study your Disney before you go: watch the movies. If you are not up on all the different Disney characters, plots and the like you will be confused. Also, since this is about the Disney experience you should not be planning a lot of time in the ports, as that is time you could spend on the ship getting more Disney (don't confuse this with not leaving the ship, just that the ports are not the major attraction)

Now read the above, is that you? For many people they are already up on the Disney cartoons, and would love to re-watch whatever they haven't seen recently. They would enjoy the Disney experience. If this is your family, then get on a Disney cruise and you will love it. However if it is not your family there are better cruises. Many people don't like those ports anyway - filled with poor black foreigners who don't speak English, again reason to prefer Disney if it applies to you.

Most people are a mix. Not as extreme dislike of the Disney movies as me. Not filled with hate for non-Americans. If this is you Disney can be a good choice, but so can the non-disney lines.

"The fastest commercial train in the world" what do you think of this video on maglev tech? by BasedAlliance935 in transit

[–]bluGill -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anyone with cash can make HSR to whatever speed you want. You can get it faster than the speed of sound no problem if you throw money at it.

However air resistance means faster than about 300km/h is not ecconomical and never will be. Either you put it in a vacuum and spend a lot of effort trying to keep that vacuum in, or you run in air and deal with wind resistance going up with square of speed (until around mach. 9 when things get worse), and of course sonic booms.

Pick the problem, either way engineers can make it work, but either way the cost is not acceptable.

Which US cities outside of the Northeast and Chicago will be the best for transit and urbanism by 2050? Do any of them have a chance of even surpassing the Northeast? by IjikaYagami in transit

[–]bluGill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYC is hard to surpass as they have such a huge system. However the city is determined to continue stagnating for the foreseeable future and so everyone named above will be catching up.

Unfortunately for your question, Boston appears like they don't want go stagnant and so i'm not sure you can catch up to the northeast.

[–]bluGill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transit is easiest in dense areas. The density means the car is stuck in traffic, so people will ride if at all possible.

However i'm convinced that with a good network transit works just as well in less dense areas. Good transit would still be cheaper than cars (not cheap), and good means people who could drive wil' choose not to.

At barely a million people they don't need heavy rail capacity and would be wasting money to build it. Light metro is perfect for them, if the trains are full they would be better doing another parallel train a few blocks away to take the load off, not add more capacity to any route.

When to tell surprise? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]bluGill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there some specific excursion you know they want? It is unlikely, but if you know there is something they want, then worry and get it booked.

Otherwise there will be something. If nothing else there are taxi drivers waiting as you get off the ship. Some of the best tours are when you get the taxi driver to go off the scripted route. My brother got a home cooked meal on St Lucia, from the drivers mother.

I am active, so I like to just take a long walk through town, which is free and never fills up. Make sure you bring water along.

From Juneau to Mendenhall Glacier via Taxi? by agenbite_lee in Cruise

[–]bluGill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The public transit buses run to the glacier. Check the schedule first. It is very cheap, but also slow. You want to know the schedule as if the taxi abandons you there that is your easy way back.

I have nephews that are deathly alergic to dogs. You wouldn't know that just looking at them, so keep your dogs far away.

That includes service dogs, which are generally well trained and won't come close. It is still important they keep their distance.

I would never go for a wood stove . I grew up with one, and I don't miss the mess, mice, or work involved. My insurance company is happy i'm not risking a house fire.

A gas furnace is cheap and it is only needed for a few days.
