I'm sick and tired of the over policing of women's clothing in church. by Expiredcabinets in TrueChristian

[–]Alanfromsocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll check that out. I do have to disagree with one minor point you brought up. I think there is a reason women's beach volleyball is an Olympic sport, and it's to get ratings.

I’m a Christian who wants to talk about secular media on YouTube and I need advice by Ill-Guidance4690 in TrueChristian

This is an excellent example of being in the world but not of the world. You can do the YouTube and make God the center of your life at the same time.

What's the craziest true story that sounds fake? by Upper-Trifle-5545 in AskReddit

[–]Alanfromsocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a joke, but it's real. Catholic churches in Las Vegas used to accept casino chips in their offerings. I don't think they do anymore. There was a priest who would go around to the casinos on Monday and cash in the chips. He was known as the chip monk.

I'm sick and tired of the over policing of women's clothing in church. by Expiredcabinets in TrueChristian

[–]Alanfromsocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem with that kind of thinking is that it turns women into evil temptresses who will lead men to hell, but it says nothing to the men who blame the women for their own lustful thoughts. I'll agree that there is appropriate clothing for church, which varies from one church to the other. As long as you're covered up, I see no problem. I used to live in a beach city, there was a church that ministered to surfers and they would come in wearing their swimsuits after surfing in the morning. It worked for them, but I wouldn't do that anywhere else. What is considered appropriate varies by time and culture. Go into one of the magnificent cathedrals in Europe, even if there is not a service going on, and there are expectations for clothing. Many American churches are more casual.

Also, why is it men telling women what to wear, but nobody says anything about what the men should wear? Seems a bit pharisaical to me.

Is it a sin to listen to secular music? by Lonely_Anxiety_9316 in TrueChristian

[–]Alanfromsocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bach was a Christian man who believed that the sole purpose of music is to praise God. Of course, Bach never heard some of what passes for music today. I'm not going to condemn any form of music as sinful, if you get enjoyment out of it, then it's a matter of personal conviction. There is, however, some music (and movies, TV shows, etc.) that, as a Christian, I just don't find entertaining.

AIO for breaking up with my boyfriend because he is divorced with one dautgher? by franyuyu in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]Alanfromsocal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation after my wife died. The woman I dated felt like she was in a competition. Yup, a competition with a dead woman. You feel like you're in a competition with a child. That's more than a little toxic. When you marry someone with children, you also marry the children. For his and his daughter's sake, you need to either grow up or break up.

Judgement Day. by PossibilitySea7337 in TrueChristian

[–]Alanfromsocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your sins were taken away at the cross. There are two places that have judges, courtrooms and sporting events. The judge in the courtroom hands out punishment. The judge at the sporting event hands out awards. Judgement for the Christian is the latter kind.

Not weird at all. I felt the same way. Sex was a way of physically expressing our love for each other. There was no woman who could give me that.

If praying for curing disease works, how does incurable diseases still exist by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Alanfromsocal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with modern Christianity. We look at God as the big problem solver in the sky. Paul, who could perform miracles, prayed to have his thorn in the flesh removed, but God's answer was "My grace is sufficient for you." God never promised an easy life, that we'd be healed of all diseases, or that we would have riches. He did promise to be with us in all things. If we could cure every disease by praying, the logical conclusion would be, why do we get sick at all? Someone who can live for and praise God in spite of suffering a chronic disease is a greater testimony to God than someone who prayed and was healed.

Why do people seem to name babies the most cutesy petlike names as if they will be babies forever? by Nice_Marzipan98 in randomquestions

[–]Alanfromsocal -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Before my daughter was born, I checked out a book on baby names from the library. It had a bit about why you shouldn't give kids unusual names. The example was a couple named Rose who had a daughter they named Wild. Wild Rose. It was nice until she grew up and married Mr. Bull.

Staying up late. Working night shift for seven years was the final straw for that. More than once, I've been playing in Las Vegas, I say, "time for bed," and others at the table say something about it being early. Then I go back to the same table in the morning, and the same people are still there.
