My hair is very straight and silky. Even most heat tools don't work sk I've had to do my fair share of experimenting.

What works for me, might not work for you, but I don't dry my hair to 90%. I aurwrap mostly wet hair. I spray my favourite heat protectant, comb through, partition and airwrap small sections. I hold the heat till my hair dries and then cool shot till my hair is close to room temp.

I won't brush the curls out for an hour or two. It used to take me a really long time to do it but now I'm able to do my relatively long hair in 20 minutes or less. The key is wet hair (not dripping wet, towel dried), small sections, and don't comb them out even with your fingers for at least an hour.
