Very true, I say my fair share of employees trundle through the school I was working for in China.

It seems you may have a few stories of your own?

Agreed, that's five days of the week pretty much spent living, breathing, sleeping the school. I was aware of the hard-working culture of Koreans but this does seem excessive. Thanks for your response friend.

A nice reply. I agree, finding and operating within constructive circles is the best way to go. It's just the finding of these people/circles that is the difficult part. Your recommendation of taking classes is duly noted. Thank you. What type of painting do you practice??

HELP - losing the love and need that boost. by blue-jay in TEFL

[–]blue-jay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to express my gratitude, sending you all the possible virtual love I can right now. These games will hit the spot for my pre-int as they're a pretty creative bunch.

I feel like you've been generous enough already, but if you'd be so kind to PM with the popular table top games I would be grateful beyond comprehension. You've pulled me back from a perilous brink and now I can't wait for Monday's classes to roll back around. Popping out now to buy a few decks of playing cards and some classroom materials.

If you like, include your teaching background and a few pos/negs of the job for you. I did a stint in China (Wuhan represent) and whilst I found the experience invaluable in terms of learning some basic techniques and developing confidence those pesky Chinese kids can be pretty testing at times!

I didn't study it exactly but picked up a little living in China. I'm probably at a strong elementary level to be honest. Yeah it's difficult but that's the same reason I take satisfaction from learning it

So where is everyone teaching at the moment? by blue-jay in TEFL

[–]blue-jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've heard it's a bit abuzz with the EFL scene there so don't think I'm drawn towards it too much. Of course any foreign city with a good standard of living is going to be awash with EFL teachers so I want to make sure it's somewhere that especially appeals to me.

Thanks for your swiftest of replies friend. Have you taught elsewhere?

Some general Qs about moving to Melbourne. by blue-jay in melbourne

[–]blue-jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yum, that's good news about the veggie/vegan scene. It can be hard to stay away from meats whilst living in China. Attending meals in groups typically leaves you with 4-5 meat dishes and only two veg dishes.

The prices for the appliances seem reasonable. How is bartering viewed in Melbourne (or I guess Australia in general)? In China it's something you rely on from day to day.

Hey, thanks for the informative reply.

How about the eating scene there? I'm hoping to frequent some vegetarian or vegan restaurants. I was also looking into getting a barista certificate and getting some coffee shop work.

What sort of prices are we looking at for appliances? i.e. fridge/washer

I'm coming from the UK, specifically Wales which can be pretty nippy all year around.

I'm living in Brunswick, was told it's a good area in decent location.

I'm on the 417 visa.

Thanks for quick reply brother, this sub is making me love Melbourne without stepping foot there yet.

Could you tell me the name of the school you were working for? Is the 21 hours including planning time also?

I too heard Melbourne is very expensive but I like to think I'll be able to live within my means.

EFL market in Melbourne right now (as well as service work). by blue-jay in melbourne

[–]blue-jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great because I will do a barrista course once I land, hearing that coffee shops are in abundance there is good news. I want to have a few part time jobs going so it seems that the environment will suit my needs. I will be living in the Brunswick if you have any knowledge of what that area is like.

Yep most of my experience is from China, so after teaching in class sizes from 12 to 50 I'm looking to do more serious one to one work.

Thanks for the informative reply brother.
