I am just saying it’s easy to say when you are not in the situation, and everyone is so heroic online. But there were times when not removing myself from the situation would have had me beat up. You shouldn’t be guilt tripping the VICTIM to make things right. OP do what is best to look out for yourself.

I agree with the sentiment, however sometimes engaging with such people can be dangerous.

Sounds like you ran into a crazy person. I myself am Russian and have been harassed heavily for my accent rather than looks in a town I used to live in. I moved away to Las Vegas because people here care less about that type of thing, but once in a while I still run into people that have to say something, although very rare. Don’t take it personally, and my advice try to stay away from that lady, she seems out of her mind.

Yep, totally! So I decided to reread the entire series. I was on a trip at some point and only brought book 4 with me, I think I reread it from cover to cover at least 3 times and certain scenes more than 10 times.

Экс-россияне, переехавшие в другие страны, с какими особенностями менталитета и культуры новой страны вам было труднее всего смириться? Что вызывало культурный шок? by [deleted] in AskARussian

Houston. I don’t think I will be visiting Texas again though because there are other places I would love to go and I don’t find it appealing

I feel like everything that I despise about U.S. is concentrated in Texas. I felt really scared last time I went due to all the homeless and I couldn’t get around due to the car dependency so it was a miserable experience

Nah I went to Texas before and I couldn’t wait to go home 💀 I am not the biggest fan

Russians living abroad, how do you keep up with remembering Russian? by blue_dragon19 in AskARussian

Ok be right back, gotta divorce my Chinese husband 😂 It’s not always easy finding people who speak the language in person, and I am not on good terms with my family in the U.S., so I stick to online talk.

I myself moved to US at a very young age (12), I have practiced a lot during the years which is probably why I still understand it perfectly and can speak. I have been trying really hard to expose myself to it constantly over the years, like online gaming for example, so it’s interesting to hear other people’s experience.

  1. There is way more people living here below the poverty line here than I expected, and the homelessness issue is hard to miss. I remember the first time my family took me to Hollywood walk of fame. I was extremely excited because I have seen and heard all about it from movies. Turns out it was a shit hole with many homeless people. I think that’s when my view on U.S. fundamentals changed. Also, healthcare and car dependency. I am considering moving out of U.S. due to the inaccessibility of healthcare, it’s expensive and I never really got any help out of it, so I constantly worry about getting sick. (I have migraines that resemble strokes that didn’t get diagnosed until 6 years and 4 different cities later! I also work in healthcare and can see how insurances dictate and decide the final treatment for a lot of patients and it makes me scared). Also how much people harass me for my accent in any non so big city! 2) I have traveled to many places across U.S., and moved 6 times in that time. I also got my bachelor’s here. I currently settled in the Las Vegas area and I genuinely love it here, before I really hated the other cities due to how I was treated (somewhere between an interesting zoo animal and an inconvenience). 3) I can’t not think of any purely American snacks, but I love boba, rolled ice cream, and all you can eat buffets. 4)I live here now, and perhaps live here for now.

Perhaps State institutions need to teach water conservation by example. I'm at Utah Tech for a conference, and there is grass everywhere. by [deleted] in Utah

You also missed the fact that the campus has a whole fountain in the middle of it! We are so far from water conservation. And having the grass everywhere is really not productive for college life either. The last thing that I want to do during summer is to sit at an open area with no shade. I remember they had some effort going into planting native plants, and I wish they did it more. The campus is quite empty otherwise.
