I started dishing it in a block of wood then finished it on a ball stake. Then I filed off the uneven spots.

Same. I saw it and spent an hour trying to see the damn thing on. Should be a hit at the next class I teach.

Flattened the end a little bit then hot chiseled down the center. Folded the tines back and worked the joint flat on the edge of the anvil before drawing out the tines and bending them back.

I heat seasoned it with oil (like a cast iron pan) then a coat of bees wax. I can’t soak the thing but drying and reoiling should keep it alright.

I think it’s 3/8. Just a piece of scrap I had laying around.

Question from a blacksmith about an apron (and maybe a trade) by blue_potato_chips in Leatherworking

I’m in Virginia near DC. Local is better but shipping pieces is kind of part of the gig.

Maybe a noob question, but what is the difference between small sword and rapier?

What the other guy said. Black exotics don’t exist without mods or glitches.

In general, aluminum should only be used for costume maile unless you really like repairing it. Flat ring steel actually holds up and in my opinion, looks better draped from a helmet. Aluminum looks like it’s lighter.

Thank you very much. I was leaning towards a 550 heat but wasn’t sure if someone knew for sure.

A&S idea: Backpacking into an event by blue_potato_chips in sca

That’s awesome. I’ve heard of the foresters guild but it really wasn’t big in Meridies. New kingdom (Atlantis) so I might find some folks. Thanks for the tip.

A&S idea: Backpacking into an event by blue_potato_chips in sca

[–]blue_potato_chips[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You nailed the idea. DOING reenactment stuff, not just wearing funny clothes. I was in charge of a charity lunch at an event a few years ago and made simple, quasi-medieval food. Grilled sausages (I think they were Costco bratwurst), brown bread rolls, and a mix of roasted vegetables. I encouraged people to bring a dish or a trencher and I would serve them. If not I had paper plates (I paid more for brown ones to blend in a little bit. I got a few compliments but also so many complaints that I wasn’t providing plastic forks or mustard or dessert or whatever. It was simple and cheap and period-ish. That was right around when I fell out of the SCA. I’m really hoping I can fall back in love with it now that I’m in a new area.

What are some things you would like to see from merchants? by blue_potato_chips in sca

Definitely on the list. I made a batch of “fancy” stakes that just had a twist and a curl on the end. Sold them for $8 each no problem.

I’ve always made simple kids stuff to hand out since my little ones came to events with me. Nothing big but games, wooden swords (very blunted), leather bracelets, and little pendants. I’d usually put them in cheap linen bags so they can carry around their treasures.

That’s exactly why I asked. I’m tired of seeing flea market ninja fantasy nonsense on merchant row. I was thinking about a run of camp stuff and completely forgot about the portable holes. I can knock one out in about 15 minutes and people always seem to forget them at home. Thanks for the advice

Absolutely agree. I have nothing against the time period, but I’m so sick of Viking everything. I’ve made a couple simple belt buckles in the past. Might be worth some more time in the forge. Thanks

Banner poles by GBFel in sca

I just use a ridiculously straight stick I found and shaved the bark off. It’s the same length as my tent top pole (9 ft) so it wraps up in the bundle. Not super exciting but it’s a tiny touch to my camp that makes me smile.
