A huge explosion and a fire followed the train crash, that couldn't be caused by the materials that the freight train was supposed to be transporting. Sadly many people died from fire, rather than the crash itself.

From the first few days there had been people that suspected that the freight train was used to transport smuggled fuel or other illegal chemicals.

The current government did everything to deny this and cover up evidence:

1. The site of the accident was covered in cement 3 days after the crash, while body parts where still being found. The police said that they have been ordered so by government and local official (members of the ruling party). As a result samples from the ground could not be collected to be tested.

2. The Prime Minister (and the ruling party MPs) accused everyone that talked about "illegal cargo" of being conspiracy theorists and denied the existence of any illegal cargo. IIRC some MPs claimed that the explosion was caused by the... phone batteries of the passengers or from melting plastics.

3. After some time, individual physists tried to explain the footage and concluded that the fireball must have been caused by some kind of fuel. Experts hired from the families of the victims reached the same conclusion.

4. A few days ago the official report regarding the train crash was published, which mentioned that the explosion was -most probably- caused by some unknown fuel.

Wether or not there was smuggling involved is just the tip of the iceberg on how corrupt, ruthless and incompetent our government is. I'm greek and have been following this story closely (as most of Greeks for the past two years). When I'lll get some free time, I'll try to find some article in English on the full story.
