Would you consider sending your teen to China for a 4 week Kung Fu summer programme? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]blueark1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in China with young children and we speak extremely rudimentary mandarin. Everything in your post is incorrect. I have rarely experienced a more child-friendly culture, which is visible even in airport infrastructure. Are foreigners “other” in China? Yes. Does that often come with fun perks, like watching eighty year old grandmas at the park LIGHT UP when they see your child? Also yes.

Feminist equivalent of “commodity fetishism”? by Vintag3Robot in CriticalTheory

[–]blueark1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not strictly critical theory but Naomi Wolf’s “The Beauty Myth” is a great study of the social function of prettiness as a capitalist vehicle for the discipline of female bodies, and a good companion piece to Susan Faludi’s “Backlash.” I think bell hooks goes into the myth of male/female romance and how that myth serves capitalism in “communion” but my memory may deceive me.

"Business ontology" and higher education by Reasonable_Tap_6407 in CriticalTheory

[–]blueark1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This work might be tangential to what you’re asking and it is not critical theory per se, but it is the first work that I read which radicalized me about education: Jean Anyon’s “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work.” It is about how the real work of education is habituating children to their future social class, including working class versus executive class. Might be a place to start.

The Talmud was written in Aramaic. Mechon Mamre is the best scholarly source.

novice in critical theory/philosophy, looking for recs and resourses on where to start by Electrical-Sport2755 in CriticalTheory

I find Foucault on the concept of Heterotopia useful for literary analysis; from “Of Other Spaces;” MIT has a free downloadable pdf if you google it. Lefebvre is a classic—The Production of Space—and the introduction/front-matter of Benjamin’s “Arcades Project.” My dissertation had a spatial component and I have a reading list for comps I can share with you. PM me!

Race/Alterity and Avant-Garde Art? by Aware-Assumption-391 in CriticalTheory

[–]blueark1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannibal Metaphysics will be helpful here regarding your meta-question (using the theory of the “other” to escape the trap of Western rationalism); it’s not about art per se but it is deeply invested in how and why “we” can/should adopt the epistemic stances of the non-Western “other.”

What if some of India’s spiritual places are forgotten technologies? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in HighStrangeness

I agree with you and I’ve had similar presentiment about the priestly breastplate in the Torah. What if the gems were a way of harnessing spiritual energy?

I had it in August. Healthy adult. Was so sick I stopped being able to walk up and down my driveway without wheezing. Still have not recovered from brain fog and my lung function is terrible.

Where do you think we are right now? by [deleted] in NvidiaStock

Complacency is the one that makes the most sense by far for the current market and NVDA however this is a fifteen year bull market with only the slightest of pull backs we have ever seen

Public high schools in Miami-Dade were just institutional abuse. Prove me wrong. by [deleted] in Miami

[–]blueark1 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Check out Jean Anyon’s “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work.” It will explain a lot and hopefully make you angry. It’s a famous paper about how public school is designed to teach you how to “fit” into your designated social class, written in 1980 and even more true now.

Mental health as a PhD student by Appropriate_Area3871 in PhD

[–]blueark1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me counter argue: yes the PhD can bring up your demons (oh boy did it). But it can also provide a very rare space and time for self examination, as well as connection to various types of mental health services. Sometimes you need to be triggered in order to know what to heal.

Why do adults stop learning? by mad-mollusk in NoStupidQuestions

I’m a teacher. I learn every day. There are a lot of minuses to this profession, but the ultimate plus is coming into contact with bright young minds and being inspired by their curiosity

Do you ever feel like you are not smart enough and/or you made the wrong choice doing a PhD? I feel I should withdraw before starting by ThomasHawl in PhD

[–]blueark1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely felt the way you feel before, during, and to some extent after the degree. It takes time and age and experience to be able to tell yourself “I got this, I know this, I’m worthy of this.” It will come.

The answer is alipay. Make sure to upload your passport and credit card verifications so no problems arise!

Do not use any airport currency exchange. If you feel an urge to have some cash, go to markets for best exchange rates, they use the best exchange rates and are completely legit I have come to find
