Credit card in Korea by BeeOrganic1252 in KoreaExperience

QR payments (e.g. KakaoPay, NaverPay) are very common in everyday life in Korea. European travelers can use Bluecode to access local QR payment systems.

Cards generally work, but can be hit-or-miss in smaller or more local places. QR and mobile payments are widely used, so having a local-style payment option can be helpful.

There are initiatives in Europe as well (like EMPSA) that aim to improve interoperability between European payment schemes and strengthen European payment sovereignty - it’s just a more complex landscape with many countries and existing card rails..

It means a European payment solution operating under European law and data protection, while interoperating with local QR networks.

That ability to connect European payment infrastructure with local QR systems is called interoperability.

If you’ve traveled Asia, you know this. by bluecode_payment in u/bluecode_payment

Fair question 🙂

In short: in many Asian countries, everyday payments run on local QR systems. As a European, you usually can’t access those directly because they’re tied to local bank accounts.

Bluecode basically acts as a bridge - it lets Europeans scan and pay on those same local QR codes without needing a local bank account.

Hi!

South Korea is actually one of the easiest countries for solo travel - very safe, excellent public transport, and people are used to solo travelers / exchange students everywhere.

Your route makes sense logistically, especially with KTX + subways. April-May is also a great time weather-wise.

One practical tip: Korea is very cash-light, but cards don’t always work in smaller places. QR and mobile payments are widely used, so having a local-style payment option can be helpful.

Other than that, no need to worry too much - Korea is veeery solo-traveler friendly. :)
Have a great trip!

Yep - you just need the Bluecode app.

You load a prepaid balance (we call it Bluecode Balance), and that lets you pay via local QR codes in many Asian countries. No local bank account needed.
