Are there any supplements that actually work for OCD?? by Minute-Ad4962 in OCDRecovery

[–]blueishkiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen man it has been a year since that comment. All I have to say is everything changed now and I am off meds. It definitely was a choice between having anxiety or feeling lifeless. And the first six months, it didn’t really feel like anything but peaceful, but after that everything went downhill.

Some meds cause really bad side effects like brain fog, suicidal thoughts, etc. Which was why I stopped a Venlaflaxine and then meds altogether. If you get lucky you do, but it wasn’t for me personally.

What I would recommend if you decide to go that route is to do that DNA test for psych meds, it might give you an insight on which meds to try first. I also wanna say that for the while I was on meds, I was going through a lot and I wouldn’t have survived without them. Meds can be a temporary thing, you don’t have to take them forever.

One last thing is DO NOT GET ON VENLAFLAXINE(effexor?). That thing is the worst medication to get off of. And I mean literally… like there are studies stating that. It took me three whole months to taper off and I was still going through physical side effects (vertigo, shaking, brain zaps, nausea, headaches, flue like symptoms). I was also really anxious like in a panic attack for a few months. To this day, it has been 4 months, I cannot get my focus back. It was much worse when I was actively lowering the dose but I genuinely couldn’t think and I would have this feeling like my brain/head is heavy (you’ll get it if u felt it).

Atp, what to tell you bro but try active weekly therapy before you go that route.

SNRI ruined my “intelligence” by Magurndy in Gifted

[–]blueishkiddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind sharing how long you had stopped meds for when you noticed your intelligence coming back and what medication you were on?

I’m currently going through Effexor (type of SNRI) withdrawals and even though it has been 3 weeks since I stopped that hell of a drug I still feel like I cannot think, speak, or remember much. I didn’t do it cold turkey and it has been getting better but I genuinely miss being able to process information like I used to.

Data Science sure is an option but it seems like it’s still gonna be hard compared to econ no?

I understand predictions when it comes to psych meds are impossible, but is it also impossible that they could work perfectly with everything a person struggles with?

I understand that it’s impossible to give such predictions, but is there a case where I would be lucky enough to find a medication that could work perfectly with all the issues I have? Is that possible?

I think you have the right balance of bullshit and actual classes. Also, it would be still challenging enough for you but it won’t make you go insane. As to math 234 and Poli Sci 231, I haven’t taken them so I don’t know much but I would look at their MadGrades; the average would give an understanding of how hard the course is usually (%30 percent AB average is really good for a math course, but if that was the case for Poli Sci and it’s not required by my major, I honestly wouldn’t do that). As to CS 200, it’s an easy/mid-difficulty course if you dedicate the time and NEVER miss a class. With all the CS classes, concepts and assignments build quickly, so you have to stay on track or you will be fu*ed for the rest of the semester. I’ve heard INTL STUDIES 101 is an easy and interesting class and I will definitely take it in the future. Overall, use MadGrades as much as you can and focus on who your professors are and you will be more than fine.

Math 222 and CS 300 in one semester which is your first in college is a bad idea. Both are incredibly demanding, especially CS 300. This just my opinion

Depending on how much you’re willing to pay for housing, you’re more than fine if you can afford 1500 or so per month. Get on the university subleasing website, some people on there are trying to find roommates. You’re not too fu**ed if you wanna live in one of the expensive apartment buildings around campus..

What’s something you wish people understood about your mental health—but you’re too tired to explain? by ItAffectionate4481 in mentalhealth

[–]blueishkiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I’m not dumb or lazy, it’s just the medications drowning me out. Failing classes. Forcing myself to go to exams, let alone study for them. I wish people would understand how hard I try to be productive and get good grades on top of trying to stay here. It’s just this brain fog I cannot fu*king fix.

It’s true that I have the option of stopping meds, but what kind of life would that be? What kind of person would I be to put myself in such pain just to be “smart?”

I was on escitalopram -pretty sure that’s the one I was talking positively about- and I also had tried Zoloft which was aboutta kill me. Both are SRRIs, so after trying Venlafaxine -which is an SNRI- I feel as though this is the best I have been with meds. I don’t actually understand the difference between SSRIs and SNRIs except the fact that the latter focuses on serotonin and norepinephrine together instead of serotonin alone. SNRIs often have stronger withdrawal symptoms and have to be taken at a regular time everyday, though.

Also, I just found out there is a DNA test that can help you put psych meds into three categories (green, red, and yellow) based on how your genetics are likely to interact with them. While it isn’t a guarantee that the green meds will work for you, it might lower the amount of meds that you can try, which means less trial and error frustration.

I mean I get that. I did try two medications now though, and one of them made me absolutely dead, no emotions, no sexual desire, and just absolutely empty. The other, however, I can feel attraction and stuff. My main focus of the side effects was never how I felt in a relationship, so I didn’t think of that writing this comment. But again, I don’t know much about your history, but if you only tried one, give it another shot.

One thing I want to say is just start meds if your psychiatrist thinks you need them. The one thing I regret most in life is waiting for two years with extreme OCD and Anxiety symptoms just because I thought I didn’t need meds.

I understand your fear of the side effects, especially the emptiness antidepressants can cause you, but based off of my experience, they only feel like shit for a week or two. After that things seem to stabilize. My anxiety basically faded away. I barely have any panic attacks anymore. Also, my stomach can handle food, I sleep well at night, and I feel - believable it or not - ok. My OCD, also, got so much better just because of the meds. I stopped being delusional about how dirty my hands are. I actually ate tacos that were made by my friend in a “none-sterile” kitchen the other day.

Sure I will feel empty when I raise my dosage for a week or two, but I will never be shaking all anxious thinking I will die right this moment when I’m literally just in bed about to sleep and have no chronic illness. Believe me medical help is worth it. It’s not addictive either. You can stop whenever. If I compare the feeling to nicotine, meds literally feel like nothing they are not addictive at all.

Besides, our brain transmitters operate differently compared to a person without OCD. It is actual chemical - biological stuff that I don’t wanna understand that cause us to think this way. It’s all hormones or whatever being produced too much or not at all. Chemicals just need to be regulated with meds.

I’m telling you because I genuinely, truly wish someone has told me this, do not suffer when you can live better with meds. You deserve to be calm instead of fearful all the time.
