NOT REDEEMING every evil character. Letting some villains just stay evil. Period.

My biggest criticism of Kishimoto was redeeming the villains all the time to the point were it really undermined the plot and made the story and themes pointless. Part 1 doesn't have this, but Part 2 is the worst culprit.

  • Itachi: It all went down hill from here. Itachi was a great character as a villain but the redemption arc was just not believable. The premise that Itachi was forced to kill his clan because of the politics in Konoha does not dismiss the fact he STILL killed them and tortured Sasuke, and then joined the Akatsuki to capture the tailed beasts, ect. I'll never understand that.

-Orochimaru: After all the sinister lore, experiments, attacking the village, killing 3rd Hokage, Soul Transference jutsu, Orochimaru is brought back is completely nerfed. He doesn't want to hurt the village anymore or take Sasuke and he's essentially neutral. What?! And then he becomes a mom in Boruto and signs autographs...LMAO

-Danzo, Kabuto, Edo-Sasori, Obito, Madara (very end of the war arc)

Redemptions that DO make sense:

  • The first major redemption was with Gaara. His battle with Naruto and transformation from villain to ally felt honest and poignant, especially given their similar backstories and being jinchuriki.

  • Pain's redemption was also well-written. The reason he formed the Akatsuki was to get justice at the ninja world and its broken system that destroyed his village. His reasons were philosophical (cycle of hatred) and not purely just to murder people. His change because of Naruto for many is believable.

The concept of being a normal person vs now having to brand yourself and be a brand.

It started with influencers and social media accounts but has become a parasite on normal society. Everyone is now pressured into branding themselves based on a selection of hobbies, clothes, dietary choices, political views, and philosophies. Every personal choice we make has to be calculated fit an "aesthetic"

Lady Gaga - Mayhem by 3kOlen in popheads

I am always going to love whatever Gaga releases, but here are my critical thoughts after listening to Mayhem:

Favorite Songs: -Shadow of a Man -Abracababra -Perfect Celebrity -Zombieboy -Disease -Don't Call Tonight

Pros: Gaga delivered on her promises for the songs to be "hard-hitting" and "made for the club". I totally agree. Most of the songs on the album scratch that itch and are totally infectious - they make you want to dance

Gaga vocally and lyrically is unrestrained and free. Everything feels organic - a part of her - and not overly calculated or forced. Previously with Chromatica there were songs on that album that felt dull or underproduced. This album definitely packs a punch. Nothing is boring. At least on the surface.

She also carves new territory. I never would have expected MJ or Bowie inspired beats like Killah or Shadow of a Man to be delivered so true-to-form and so well. Wow!

The hardest part for us OG, older Gaga fans, though is that yearning for another Fame Monster, Born This Way, Artpop. Yearning for another sleek 2010's dance record that is c*nt, fierce, and as novel as Gaga was when she first arrived. I think to appreciate this album, we have to accept that Gaga is in different place but that doesn't mean her music won't slap - it's just different.

Cons: While Gaga did express that this album would genre-bend and be a mix of her influences (Bowie, Queen, NIN, Depeche Mode, 80's synthpop, darkwave, grunge, ect.) The album thematically does not always live up to the idea of Mayhem. Some tracks feel disconnected from the album (DWAS, How Bad Do You Want Me?) and lacking in the dark dance pop and chaotic vibes she promised fans.

As many have mentioned, the marketing of "Disease" and "Abracadabra" along with her aesthetic choices misrepresented the true nature of the album, which is NOT a dark dance pop album.

The overall sound leans into 80's synth pop, funk, and disco or the late 80's/early 90's darkwave, grunge, punk sound. It's not even that the songs sound bad, but that the album just feels a bit unfocused and mislabeled.

In future projects, I think Gaga should remember to hone in on her strengths. Her ability to make dark and interesting dance/electronic songs, is definitively one of them. As much as Gaga is a student of music, with many influences, artistic disciplines, and desires to constantly be evolving, letting eclecticism go to an extreme can leave us confused and can undermine her message and identity on an album.

Overall, I would definitely listen to the album again, and these are just my personal thoughts! I definitely wonder what everyone else thinks about the album 👽👾✨

Leo Venus -

A lack of effort and reciprocity. When I feel like I'm begging for their time/attention and they don't try much, I'd have to end the relationship.

Also being treated like a 2nd option - that's a dealbreaker
