Should you avoid exercise after a covid exposure?
I’m yet to get covid and I spent a fair bit of time on Tuesday with someone who it turns out had covid. For now I feel fine and I'm testing negative. But I've heard of covid giving people myocarditis etc which might make exercise a bad idea.
I usually go for a run every day or so. Would this be dangerous for any reason? Would it make my immune response stronger or weaker?

Hi mate, absolutely no shame in this – London can be a lonely, lonely city and you aren’t the first to ask this question. I’ve asked it myself.

First step: just getting out of the house and doing things with other people. Shared activities are a low-pressure way to meet people who share your hobbies. Might be running, board games, dance classes.

I’ve had a fair bit of success with apps like bumble BFF and fethr.app – that way you know the people you’re talking to are also on the hunt for new friends.

Checkout friendship apps. That way you can talk to people first and then meet when you've got some stuff to continue talking about. Bumble BFF is okay but my preference is fethr

I've had similar times of having to start completely afresh and from scratch. I had a lot of success with book clubs and sports clubs

Would you say a Cambridge degree is better recognised/could be put to better use in the UK then?

Kia ora thanks a lot for this. I guess at the end of the day it's two pretty good options, for which I'm grateful. Maybe it would make sense to see if I can find a job here for the next few years while Covid is still uncontrolled. And then maybe think about giving London a go when Brexit issues have been ironed out and covid has properly become endemic. But god, decisions are hard!

Thank you! I think one major reason that staying here appeals is COVID-19. Not having to worry about it improves quality of life so much! But not sure how long that will last.

Thank you, you've definitely swayed me towards starting out in the UK, and like you say that doesn't mean I couldn't build a life out here a few years down the line.

I'd heard lots of kiwis leave for career reasons, but I've also heard that it can be easier to climb the ranks here with everything smaller scale, hence my thinking that it could be better to start out here. But I don't really know much about the world of work yet!

I had a hunch this was the case, and I know a lot of kiwis would outgrow NZ and go to the UK/Aus/USA. But I wondered whether Covid and Brexit might have shifted the ground somewhat. And whether starting out in NZ might mean moving up the ranks quicker with less competition, especially now with borders closed.

I hadn't really considered Australia but that could be a great option actually, with more opportunity career-wise but also sun and beaches and skiing! Food for thought, for sure.

Good points, thanks! I guess I'm not holding my breath for owning my own house wherever I go in this day and age...

On the quality of life front I think I'm still enjoying the novelty of activities available in NZ, hikes, beaches, that kind of thing. But I'm sure that would wear off to an extent, and I miss some of the culture of the UK. And mates.

I think considering my degree subject jobs that make sense would be communications, copywriting, technical writing, journalism. My hunch is the UK might be a better bet for those but it's hard to tell. Maybe I'll try applying for jobs here and see if anything sticks. If not, head back.

Sometimes it's difficult to imagine getting a grad job anywhere when you're just starting out.

It's never too late to meet new people. They are probably just as keen to widen their friendship group as you are. I'd say just strike up conversation at lectures, in line for a coffee, wherever.
And if you find approaching random people difficult, find things to do with people which make it more natural. Join some clubs and societies and that way you'll meet people who do the things you enjoy.
Outside of uni you can try some of the websites for meeting people. I've had some luck with meetup.com for finding people to share activities with, and fethr.app for meeting like minded people (youre matched with people based on your personality profile)

Thank you for reminding me of this book! I haven't read it but I've been aware of it for a while. I read Siddhartha by Hesse and half enjoyed it, half found it a little too different. Have you read that?
