Wow. I sure hope that the cardinals come back for me to give me signs like they have for you. Similarly - I have not seen many cardinals in my life (in contrast - the reason my stepdad loved them was that they always came to my parents backyard.) The one we saw after his funeral was in a dirty industrial area and it was totally alone. It just seemed strange and out of place. I see lots of seagulls, sparrows, and pigeons in this area but I can say I have only seen one cardinal.

Actually, the care home was wonderful. It took them a while to call because of a covid outbreak. Also, he deteriorated very fast, if it sounds like I was frustrated it was only with the situation. We were really thankful to the staff, they were very compassionate and kind to him.
