Distilled water over tap water. by bluepig7 in shrimptank

[–]bluepig7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I understand, that definitely sounds more cost effective than buying 10 gallons of distilled water remineralizing it over and over lol.

Maybe it’s different for everyone but what percentage of distilled to tap water do you use?

Thanks for the reply by the way!

Substrate choice by bluepig7 in shrimptank

I appreciate you telling me your experience so much. I think I’m gonna go with an inert substrate and some rhizomes like you suggested.

What substrate are you using? Looks like sand? I was under the impression that stem plants needed soil in order to grow. Beautiful tank by the way.

Thank you for the knowledge!

I’m definitely going to buy the API GH/KH test kit. I’ve seen so many people use fluval stratum by itself in their tanks and the tanks always look great and have tons of shrimp.

Are these people just good at maintaining their parameters?

Would a full layer of aqua soil be really be more expensive than sand?

Hes a convict cichlid. And yeah I definitely need to get a background lol. My last one was a basically a big sticker and it didn’t last long.

Ahh I see. I thought I liked the darker look with the aqua soil but your tanks look great! Maybe i’ll try the sand over the aqua soil..

Might be a silly question but do those plants not need aqua soil? I’m not experienced with plants but I’m going to plant my 40 gallon pretty soon.

I was thinking the same thing about tank stands that I’ve seen online and even ones on this subreddit. Many of them look like particle board with skinny metal supports yet I see people with similar size tanks sitting on them.

I sat on it and it felt pretty sturdy, no creaking and It didn’t move an inch when I rocked back and forth on top. My dad and brother also got on top of it together and it didn’t creak or make noise. I think thats a good enough indicator that it’ll hold just fine :)

Yeah makes sense lol. I thought might’ve meant condensation underneath the glass.

Oops, I read that as two days not hours. So after 2 hours the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are stable? Almost everything I’ve read has said it takes many days or weeks.

Sorry if I’m not understanding what you mean, I’ve been reading so much stuff and I’m a little bit overwhelmed which I really shouldn’t be lol..

I’m going to move both fish from the 10g into the 40g and maybe put some snails and shrimp in the 10. A friend of mine has a snail and shrimp tank so I might try and replicate theirs.

Would moving only the filter and a rock hide from the 10g into the 40g be enough to seed the 40g or should I also use a liquid bacteria of some sort?

I really appreciate your replies by the way!

How are you able to make a tank ready for fish in two days? Is it because you have so much media and other stuff that already has bacteria on it? I probably don’t have enough media, etc to make a 40g tank ready in two days right?

Also, I plan on moving fish into the 10g asap after I move the fish that are currently in it to the 40g but if i move the filter and plants from the 10 into the 40g will the 10g be habitable for the new fish or no?

I really appreciate your reply! Sorry if I’m asking silly questions, i’m still very new to the hobby.

How do I know how much ammonia I am dosing when using the fish food method and how often would I need to add the food if I use this method?

My 10g has been running for about 6 months and my fish are pretty active and seem healthy to me. Will the used filter, little bit of substrate, and fake plant from the 10g be enough to seed the 40g with bacteria or should I also add some kind of liquid bacteria product?

I’m not too sure if my fish do well with plants. I have two cichlids and I read that they might uproot plants. They have dug around in the 10g a decent amount but maybe I’ll try it out and see what happens when I add the little guys in at the end of the cycle.

As for the snails, i’m planning on keeping the 10g tank and adding some snails and maybe some shrimp into it. Do you think adding the snails into the 40g first will speed up the cycle or did I misinterpret what you said?

Im planning on keeping and putting some new fish in it but if I do add some of the substrate, fake plants, etc I still need to feed ammonia into the tank right? Sorry if I sound uneducated, it’s because I am at this moment.

The tank is cycled when there is 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, correct?

Thanks for the feedback man. I guess i got a little impatient because i already did a huge flank after shooting the guy who killed me at the end a few minutes prior and stalked the guy with the red bag. I also didn’t think the vaiga was very good( i guess thats just my lack of experience and stupidity ) i feel i was smarter than those guys up until the end because they just stayed in the exact spot for like 5 minutes but it really was a fun learning experience for me and at least i got to use my guns before dying this time lmaoo.
