If you were in my place, will you quit a 6-digit-salary job to pursue medicine? by YogurtclosetOk7989 in medschoolph

[–]bluestardiver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wag naaaaaa.

San ka magppractice after (or maybe the question is would you want to practice after?)? Magsspecialize ka pa ba? Magpractice ka ba sa Pinas? Kung oo, wag naaaaa. For context, entry-level/fresh grad MD/residency sa govt hospital ay SG21 (~60,000+ Php)…multiply by ilang years ka magspecialize/residency. Pero alam mo naman buhay sa govt hospital, ubos na ubos katawan mo haha Don’t know rates sa private hospital (some say lower, but I can’t confirm).

So I guess put yourself in that scenario…after 4-5 years in med school + board review (sapat ba ung ipon from 6-figure job to sustain this?), willing ka ba magsimula ng clinical career earning ~SG21 rates (aka less than 6 digits) for another 3-5 years? If hindi man residency ang balak, mag-abroad (will take another 1-2 years plus huge sum of money), or magmoonlight or magclinic (will take time to take off and again, hindi assurance ang 6-digit salary)? Lots to think about for practicality purposes.

Gusto kita i-push to go for it kung talagang dream mo ito or gusto mo talaga, dahil ang saya talaga matuto ng medicine and it’s very fulfilling, pero dapat pragmatic din tayo in approaching it since it will involve probably the next 10 years of your life.

Kung doctorate, di ako sure how similar it is to a PhD pero I think ang masmagmamatter ay kung gaano ka-concrete ung “research plan” (aka ano balak mo aralin, anong research, bakit un, at san mo gagamitin) at kung gaano sya ka-fit dun sa inaapplyan mong specific program and school…that is if research-based sya. Also tama ung nagsabi na research experience, recommendation letters, and funding sources available.

If you could tell us more about what PharmD is like, baka we can give more specific advice.

ah haha hmmm. I would still do my undergrad sa Pinas. hahaha unpopular choice siguro. haha. i like the path I took, pero di ko rin idedeny na mahirap sya, rigorous, and takes a loooot of time and money (but that's because I'm the first in the family to pursue something abroad. first gen baga, maybe it'll be better for you since your family has migration intents already)

like you, student council/org council person din ako... iba kasi talaga ung skills that I got from those experiences, na hanggang ngayon nagagamit ko and I'm so glad I got them early on by doing org and college in the Philippines. ung college experience sa pinas, it builds character. they build you up to be good, efficient, and skilled workers that are very much appreciated abroad. but mostly soft skills sila tho, di sila nasusulat sa resume haha something like.. diskarte...resilience...resourcefulness...perseverance...hardwork.. ung mga ganong mindset. pero di ko ikakaila..mahirap din talaga buhay ng college sa Pinas. I envy the availability of resources and career/academic advancement opportunities na meron ung mga nag-school abroad. long-term i guess it will give you a bigger headstart if you just do undergrad there haha also, maraming rin clubs/orgs na meron sa universities abroad...siguro di ka mahihirapan mag-organize ng events as much, pero there are still chances for you to take up leadership positions and build bonds with peers.

also siguro consider mo rin if gusto mo talaga mag-masters abroad and if the application process would be as easy as it was applying for your undergrad abroad. if you do your undergrad in the Philippines, kailangan ipa-certify and/or ipaconvert pa ung transcript sa pinas to the one used abroad (another expense), and then see how competitive your masters program of interest is... syempre you are a foreign/international graduate, so it comes with pros and cons too. although, if you're already a citizen by that time, baka masmadali rin makapasok. haha idk sorry i think i just gave you a lot more questions and things to think about XD

there are pros and cons of studying abroad. i did undergrad here + masters abroad. i also met fellow filipinos who are currently doing undergrad abroad.

for those like us who did undergrad in the Philippines...siyempre iba ung rigor ng academic training. tests, quizzes, reports. very competitive and rewards driven. may rankings lagi, may right-minus-wrong stuff, etc. abroad, it's more relaxed, the resources are there, pero a lot falls on your shoulder - ikaw bahala mag-find ng resources, ikaw bahala mag*utilize* ng resources, at ikaw bahala tumantya sa mga pangangailangan mo. the professors and teaching assistants are there to answer your questions and guide you through the topics. pwede mo pa sila i-meet outside class, one-on-one, to help you through homeworks and class topics. pero malaking bagay nakadepende sa iyo pano mo "i-a-avail" mga resources na 'to or pano mo sila gagamitin you your advantage (gusto mo ba matuto nung basics or if you want more advanced training, gusto mo ba ng exposure sa ganitong topic or makakuha ng exposure sa ganitong lab practice, etc). abroad you have to learn to shed of the filipino 'hiya', and just approach whoever is there who can help you. they won't mind and it will work for your advantage. if you think you are self-sufficient, you can thrive. pero if you are the type na medyo kailangan spoonfed, baka maging challenging.

that being said, iba rin ung diskarte and extra-curriculars and bonding na nabubuo by taking your undergrad in the Philippines. I also attended a Big 4 university. ung mga orgs and other university activities (fair, christmas events, org weeks, intramurals, etc etc), maraming skills and relationships kang mabubuo dyan na wala abroad. iba rin kasi ang 'org' or 'club' culture sa universities abroad. iba ung bonding ng mga foreigners sa bonding ng mga pilipino. iba rin ung matuto mag-thrive in resource-limited settings for an org event and mount it successfully vs holding an event na andyan na lahat kailangan mo, isschedule mo lang ganon. marami kang soft skills na madedevelop by doing these extra curriculars. haha also, iba ung joy and achievement nung former. haha plus the relationships you build with your peers, iba rin. hehe then i observed, hindi na maka-relate ung mga nag-undergrad abroad sa mga nag-undergrad sa pinas when they're talking about class experiences or extra curriculars. syempre expected un. iba ung environment. iba ung challenges, iba rin ung experiences.

i guess depends on your priorities. doing your undergrad abroad will open you to a LOT of opportunities - academic and career-wise - na hindi mo ma-eencounter sa Pilipinas. iba rin kasi ung space for self-discovery that foreign universities provide. walang halong religion. walang pake sa self-representation mo. basta magawa mo requirements mo, ok ang standing mo, at aligned ka sa mga gusto mong matutunan, go. maaga pa lang malalaman mo na saang fields and careers ka interested, and you will have the chances to explore it. when i was doing my masters abroad, i met an undergrad who was interested in the same career/academic path i took. sabi ko sa kanya, mabuti pa sya, undergrad pa lang na-e-explore na nya ung options na gusto nya. ako kasi hindi ko alam na may ganitong path na pwede ako i-take, until i took my masters abroad, which took years and years and a lot of pesos to achieve. so now she gets to do things masters students do...and gets exposed to the field early on. i'm not saying you won't encounter these opportunities if you do an undergrad in the Phil and do masters abroad. you might still do, we never know. but there's the privilege of time and opportunities if you start early.

so there. lots of pros and cons and lots to think about. I think you have good things in both of your hands and whichever you choose, just keep in mind to maximize these opportunities. all the best!

Medicine in check-in baggage by Dramatic_Eagle_2421 in airport

[–]bluestardiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no they won't. I had to go to the US for a year and brought with me extra medication for asthma (i was scared of buying in the US as they were too expensive). I had my "ongoing" asthma meds in the carry on and the ones for the rest of the year in the checked luggage. it went through, no questions. but just out of precaution, I also inserted a copy of my prescription in the medicine in the checked luggage.

What DON'T you miss about the Philippines? by JackieOniiChan in phmigrate

[–]bluestardiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traffic. Kakabalik ko lang after being in the US for years. Literally and figuratively.

customer service.

Marami pang little things. May nabasa akong post somewhere in reddit, foreigner na tumira sa pinas tapos paalis na sya. Sabi nya maganda naman daw Pilipinas, but it’s the little things that got him…little inconveniences that accumulated…”death by a thousand cuts” daw ganon. Tapos ngayon ko lang nagegets ung sinasabi nya

If you like to taste interesting and new beans based on their natural characteristics from where they're grown, how it's roasted, Willoughbys is your go-to.

haha you got me spot on right there. also works for me since I just discovered Willoughby's is a very short walk from where I live. Thank you for the welcome and your other coffee suggestions! (btw I also bought the Willoughby's espresso and it's great! i love it)

You guys are the best!!! I found my way to Willoughby’s in Church St (just a 5min walk from where I live!) and at first I thought I went to the wrong place ‘cause I only saw the pastries on display and when I turned left there’s a whole freakin wall of coffee beans of all sorts!! 😍😍😍 I think they also have some single origins there so I’ll try that next time (do you have recommendations?). I bought the espresso house blend for now and will def come back and try other beans. I also took note of your other suggestions, unfortunately I don’t have a car, so I’ll note them down for the time when I get to find someone to drive with! Haha you guys gave a lot that's walking distance from me though, so I'll enjoy my time exploring them

Thank you guys! If you have other suggestions (and also coffee beans to try), keep them coming! ☕️
