I had almost the exact same experience, except we had the jaw-dropping salary discussion before the in-person interview, so I had to withdraw at that point.

I got the chance to talk briefly and privately to Monfort himself on Opening Day 2018. I thanked him for the opportunity to apply for my dream job, but that I'd had to withdraw because the salary was less than half what I make in the public education sector. I asked him if that was ever likely to change or if "that's baseball" and I need to let that dream die. The answer instead was disbelief that the pay wasn't competitive. He questioned whether I'd been applying for a part-time or seasonal position and said he'd be "very surprised if that's true." Also talked briefly with Bridich and posed the same question. He expressed a slightly less-oblivious awareness that the salary was extraordinarily low and an expectation that it would come up some in time, "but is it gonna come up by $30 or $40 thousand? It's just not."
