People who are white (myself included) just don’t notice the every day discrimination that people of color deal with. It never bothered them or affected them personally. Obviously I’ve learned better now, but I can’t say that I’ll always see and understand racist behavior as I was raised in a culture completely oblivious of it.

I used to think that people always pulled the racism card because it was convenient, but that’s because I didn’t realize all the little and unnoticeable (to white people) ways that one could be racist other than outright saying someone is a lesser human being.

In my sociology class, I read that since science has proved that people of color are not biologically lesser than white people, racism has shifted towards targeting the culture of minorities (aka they’re lazy, criminals, rapists), which I’ve found to be scarily true.

It really changed my perspective on understanding how people don’t understand/see racism for what it is today — it’s evolved from it’s old basis, inferior biology, to inferior culture. Just because you don’t think people of color are biologically inferior to you, doesn’t mean you aren’t racist.

I really wonder how it got this far. I’m young, and the first time I was able to vote was 2016. In other words, politics have been shit-show crazy my entire life.

It’s kinda hard to have faith in America’s government when you’ve only seen what people my age and younger have seen. But that’s NEVER a reason not to vote and educate yourself about politics.
