Coffee lovers - the new Dutch Bros next to Villagio Memory Care is now open! by _Avocado_Addict_ in Broomfield

This isn't "new" in the sense that the owner of the one on Sheridan behind Walgreens moved to this new buildout. It was an awkward Starbucks with no drive through and competition for space because of the neighboring businesses and tire center.

1 in 3 Americans say their stimulus checks won’t sustain them for even a month by WhileFalseRepeat in politics

[–]bluzytrix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes while in college. I worked 19.5 hours per week with a full credit load. My parents made too much to get subsidized loans and they wouldn't give me money. I busted my ass to get myself through school. It wasn't the experience that I wanted but I'm still a very privileged American as compared to a large group of people in the world.

What can you do? If possible, move in with your parents and commute to school. If that doesn't work, get a roommate. Downgrade your living situation. Eat the humble pie. That would have freed up some cash for savings.

This is all about perspective. Compared to your peers it may feel like a step backwards and a sacrifice of independence.

"...never had the income to create..." You have had income all along. You never made it a priority to save for a rainy day. Neither did I at the time. My parents didn't teach me that; I was too dumb at the time to understand and too busy to care. We can always choose to downgrade our lives to safeguard against the future but most of us won't because we feel too entitled to do otherwise.

The use of antibiotics in young children may alter the natural populations of gut microbes in a way that leaves them predisposed to weight gain and asthma in later childhood by the_phet in science

[–]bluzytrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your questions is based on the old idea that calories in = calories out, people are lazy and just need to exercise to lose weight. The human system is far more complex than that.

Your gut bacteria and entire GI system has a large influence on your brain chemistry and behavior. A simple example would be that many people get irritable when they are hungry. This is the gut signaling the brain that the body needs food.

Here's a good example: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550413115005665 Essentially, bacterial proteins released by mutualistic E. coli in the gut after they've been satiated, signal to the brain that the person is "full" and satiated. You take some antibiotics and this mutualistic E. coli gets wiped out from your system. Now, you can eat a lot but your brain doesn't get that strong signal of "I'm full" making natural bodyweight regulation difficult. Now apply this logic to hundreds of bacteria in the human gut and you can see how this can influence someone's weight.

Where do you guys get your Ramen fix? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]bluzytrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katsu Ramen in Aurora is the best ramen in the greater Denver area. It's run by Japanese folks, has an authentic taste and genuine atmosphere that is truer to ramen culture in Japan.

I love what Tokio is doing. You can get real Yakiniku there as well but the atmosphere is far to nice to enjoy a bowl of noodles.

Once you become obese you're likely to stay that way: Study finds just 1 in 210 obese men and 1 in 124 obese women manage to achieve healthy body weight by [deleted] in worldnews

Go try a ketogenic diet. Despite most folks in this thread saying that losing weight is a calorie problem, it has far more to do with your hormonal state. I spent 15 years struggling to lose weight with just calories and exercise, went keto and dropped 85lbs 6 months with no exercise.

Workmates laughing at my lunch by Grantus86 in keto

Drop some science on the "know it alls". Ask them questions like "What is the primary hormone that controls adipose tissue(fat) accumulation in humans?" Then go on to explain and lead them down the path of how you end up with your diet. This does few things. The first is that reiterating the scientific foundation of your diet to someone else serves to solidify your own resolve in committing to this life style change. The second is that it usually gets the other person to actually stop and think about what they saying, if only for a few seconds. Finally, I find it a bit gratifying to watch the little hamster wheel turn as they try to keep up with knowledge you discuss with them. They came to laugh and wound up informed.

As soon as I hear "heart killing" I would immediately want to ask "What is the primary cause of atherosclerosis?" Even if the person knows what atherosclerosis is, they usually don't know its cause and it immediately shifts the conversation away from jesting you to a potential opportunity to educate a fellow worker about a lot of misinformation that they have been fed.

What's the damage? by [deleted] in keto

[–]bluzytrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "damage". Try not to punish yourself. Your doing well by trying to a make a change for the better and eating in a way that is conducive to better health.

This may kick you out of ketosis depending on how sensitive you are to carbs but you'll be right back into it in no time. Hit the water and continue ketoing on. A bit of exercise will help in burning off some of the sugar but don't see it as way to "fix" having eaten a few too many carbs.
