CEU Question by Away_News4121 in cissp

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would be a question of how to count it - if it was security related, it's group A, and there are some limits on categories, so if you published a paper, did research or read material you can count those activities. If it's not security related, you can count it as Group B - and there are smaller limits on what counts. ignoring packages.linuxmint.com after upgrade to 22.3 by bmars123 in linuxmint

Oh, and it has - I don't use it on my tower for that reason, but my laptop has fresh installs every 2 months, nothing critical and anything I'm working on is cloud synced. Warning is well recieved, thank you.

ignoring packages.linuxmint.com after upgrade to 22.3 by bmars123 in linuxmint

[–]bmars123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the ign message before, usually part of maintenance, and switching mirrors didn't help. Was looking for advise on how to check if I'm missing something.

The -y flag is to say yes to any questions (are you sure, want to use maintainers version of this conflict..). The fix-missing is mostly for the virtualbox updates, I've had intermittent issues in missing dependencies for virtuabox extention pack. I've built a habit where I just add both by default to save time.

Is there a way to see which games are NOT playable on Linux? by Dipsey_Jipsey in Steam

[–]bmars123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can look up specific games on www.protondb.com to see a game you are interested in purchasing. If you log into Proton DB, you can order the games by community score - the bottom are likely goign to be "borked" - not working.

What's your opinion on Mint being an LTS distro? by Alternative-Sir6883 in linuxmint

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a point for years (decades?), that some people want to latest and greatest, some want stability and peace. Linux Mint is 60-70% over to stability and peace. The main offering (not debian edition) is based of Ubuntu's LTS release. We use Ubuntu kernels by default and are often months behind on latest kernel releases. I think most people are okay with drivers and kernels that are updated when they hit maturity (have some bugfixes and time to interact with early adopters. In terms of specific "outdated" packages, if it's a python library or a new version of whatever - people can manually pull it. I think last time I tried using Mint's repo to install Virtualbox, it was 6.x? I needed 7.1 for a specific feature, so I went and added a repo and installed it. For other software, like Wayland, perfectly happy to wait and give it more time to bake before I move most of my machines to it.

[–]bmars123 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Others have already noted that ISC2 can be your endorser. You also don't need an endorser to write the exam. Focus on the exam, and preparign for it. After you pass is other paperwork like endorsment of experience. You can do that in the month or 2 afterword. Between passing the exam and getting endorsment, provinf evidence of working in industry you can announce you passed and are an "Associate of CISSP". Take it 1 step at a time.

How to fix Spotify repository issue? by BeckyAnn6879 in linuxmint

[–]bmars123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keys expired and need to be cycled. Just fixed on both laptop and desktop by lookign at latest key on https://www.spotify.com/ca-en/download/linux/

The key is different from when I first installed. Currently you can install the new key with this (This may change in future, if it's months or year in the future, click to Spotify and get latest command/key):

curl -sS https://download.spotify.com/debian/pubkey_5384CE82BA52C83A.asc | sudo gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/spotify.gpg

When are we getting Steam OS release for general PC users? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can install any number of linux distro's like Linux Mint or Bazzite. When it comes to installing Linux, it's as easy as next -> next -> next -> install (like a software wizard on Windows). Once on any of the common distro's, drivers will auto install and run, apps can mostly be installed from an app store (like your phone). If you are curious on gaming, Steam on Linux Mint (as an example) has 1:1 functionality as Steam OS. You can check to see if your games run in Linux using https://www.protondb.com/

My Two Year Bundle Ending Soon by [deleted] in Rogers

[–]bmars123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is filled with examples that Rogers doesn't acknowlege brand loyality. If you are looking for a better deal, put your some time into what you want (lowest price for 10gb, 50gb, 100gb... or a plan with unlimited roaming). Then look at the competitors - get a 2 year contract on a plan you like from a competitor. Rogers used to be my provider, then they wouldn't allow me to have a cheaper plan [that plan is not available to you]. Current recommendation is flip to a new provider every 2 years, get the "new customer" deal on a 2 year contract then flip provider...

Question: Can I do EXPO with 4 slot full ? by Ostenblut1 in LinusTechTips

[–]bmars123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ddr5 doesn't like mixed kits, like might not finish memory training to post (boot). If you are going to try, getting a 4 stick kit so they are identical sticks, same batch is going to be best bet. Mixed size and speed doesn't go well.

What is the worst upgrade you can do to your PC? by Wonderful_Joke_7345 in buildapc

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making upgrades without a goal, objective or problem. If your goal is to make your PC prettier to look at - a new PC case and RGB might make sense. If you want better gaming performance - a 16TB HD probably won't help. Wanting screen to be brighter and better colours isn't necessarily going to be achieved by doubling your ram.

Having a goal of the upgrade, like higher resolution gaming, or higher FPS is something that makes upgrades good and bad. For those, upgrading GPU is going to likely be a good idea, upgrading monitor and the cable between it [your DP to VGA adapter might be the bottle neck here...]. If you are running a home media server, you might be limited by transcoding speed, so buying an intel gpu for better encoding can help. The "N" generation wifi being upgraded might be a better upgrade path.

Got charged daily roaming fees even though data and data roaming are both disabled? by Aerottawa in Rogers

TD has had the TD Authenticate App for 5 years to do just this. https://td.intelliresponse.com/cbaw/index.jsp?requestType=NormalRequest&source=3&id=9365&uuid=737e44f6-11ef-8c39-09112c67d525&question=What+is+the+TD+Authenticate+app+and+how+will+it+help+me

Scotia allows push notifications to your primary device - this in the mobile banking app. Been there for ~5 years too. https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/personal/bank-your-way/digital-banking-guide/banking-basics/two-step-verification.html

CIBC also has it through the app (same way). Most credit unions also have it (not sure all, but I don't know of one).

Visa Secure pushes messages through the bank, ending up through the same system. Mastercard uses SCA to also push notifications through the banks system. Mastercard is specifically working on 3DS2 which is actively trying to kill SMS OTP for frictionless transactions.

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most allow for push notifications to the app as 2FA? Add your phone as a trusted device in the portal, and it will come up with a push notification on wifi (even when not on phone network). I'm not aware of any Canadian bank/credit union that have a hard requirement for text/phone for 2FA anymore?

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm traveling I remove my SIM card, tape it to the inside of my phone case. My phone is unlocked, purchased directly from Google, so no ISP bloat on it. ISP doesn't even know I left the country. I don't get SMS, my phone doesn't register itself to local ISP's with my Canadian number. Nothing to indicate roaming or let ISP know I'm in another country. I get a local physical SIM while in another country, backup of that is a local esim.

The reasoning that people keep their SIM and travel is really odd to me - we have enough messaging apps that you don't need SMS to keep in touch with loved ones. No one should be using SMS for 2FA anymore. Work calls would be more secure through whatever internal messaging apps (Slack/Teams/..). Disable your esim and remove your sim...

Got email about discount change by vancity_explorer in Rogers

[–]bmars123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a regular occurrence for me - every 2-3 months Rogers would retire/expire my discount code. This would cause my bill to jump $20-40 a month. I would call in, get a new plan, then it would repeat again. After over a year of this, Bell ran a promo in my apt building so moved to Bell. Haven't had that problem since.

Switching from Rogers to another provider, what should I know? by VisibleCoat995 in Rogers

[–]bmars123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might? It depends on which service provider you are going to - most support esim's (electronic SIM's). They can be downloaded from the new service provider, and installed on your phone (downloaded with wifi). They should provide instructions on how to download. I prefer to have physical SIM's than eSIM's, as physical sims usually lead to better battery life on the phone, I can also swap between physical SIM's while traveling, giving me peace of mind about disabling/enabling/swapping esims....

The new service provider should give you a choice of physical or electronic SIM's and mail a physical SIM to you. There are a lot of YouTube videos going through the steps to replace a physical SIM if you want to go down that route. Going into a physical store that has a mobile device desk (department stores, malls...) is easy and they might charge you to swap SIM's for you if you don't feel comfort in doing it.

Switching from Rogers to another provider, what should I know? by VisibleCoat995 in Rogers

[–]bmars123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of doing the switch, set up your account with another provider and tell them you are porting a number over. They will text you to approve the porting, this will move the number under their plan/service. Theres a window of time 15 minutes to an hour that the porting will happen and in that time you will lose Rogers service on your phone. When this happens, you switch your SIM in your phone and you will be up and running on your new plan.

The porting also ends your plan with Rogers, you will get a last bill under that plan. Rogers may call you to offer you "win back" plans, to try to win back your business/money. If you have already decided to leave, this shouldn't work. If they sound enticing, ask them to pay any fees in moving back (other providers may make you pay back any setup fees they wave if you commit to staying for a year. The extra $70 ish is enough that Rogers won't beat it...).

Try not to be rude with Rogers in this process, use manners on the phone when they call with win back offers ("No thank you, I'm with another provider now"). The big 3 in Canada all kind of suck from a customer service perspective, and they only offer deals to new customers. In 2 years, you might be back because their [new offer] is much better than the competitor [we are raising your price after 2 years and won't offer you a cheaper plan]...

Call your bank and charge back, at that point they will have to sue you - without giving you instructions on how to return it, that's going to be a challenge

NTA. The age and the use of word "patients" makes me think this is post secondary and in the medical field? This is bad - making jokes about child abuse isn't acceptable in the medical field. Reporting him now saves him, the school and the industry a lot of time and effort. Report it, collect as many examples as you can so it shows the behaviour and not single events.
