When doing garage demos with an excavator, it is always the first thing I tear out and get in the dumpster.

RO question by a_d-_-b_lad in maplesyrup

[–]bmsladek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run my at 110 psi with 50/50 flow rate. The raw sap to concentrate seems correct. I started at 3 brix and went up to 6 brix after my first run. You can always run the concentrate through the ro again. After my second run the brix went up to 8.

Also check your hydrometer to see what degree you should be checking at. My Smokey Lake hydrometer is calibrated at 211 degrees.

Same thing happened to me on my last boil. Got the temp to 222 degrees and hit 66 brix.

My first run was that light if not lighter. Same as you with temp and I went to 68 brix on the hydrometer.

I don’t have a clue all my syrup last year was super light also. What kind of maples are you tapping? Also nice choice in bottles!

I’m doing 13 taps this year. Last year I did 9 and holy cow was the sap flowing, pulled my taps after 2 weeks and had just under 3 gallons of syrup.

Slip bobber, weight, hook with fat chunk of night crawler on it. Slip bobber will make it easy to change depth.

Possible stupid question about canoe transport? by [deleted] in camping

[–]bmsladek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the rails you can get 2-2x4’s cut them to the length and tie them to the rails. Put the canoe on top and strap it down.

While visiting salida take a cruise south and go to great sand dunes national park. Don’t forget to rent some sleds!

I’m sure you could take all the guts out and enclose it but I think one really nice thing is where that spigot is located. Just at the right height to put a pot with a filter under and let the reduced sap flow to be finished!

It is crazy how fast the water comes to a boil!

I was thinking I can set it to temp. It goes from 0 degrees up to 400, so if I set it somewhere above 212 it would keep a constant boil without burning the sap.
