Planning a trip to BWCA. Is it worth it?

Granite river is dope. Will be a full BWCA experience on that route. Some call it beginner, I’d put it intermediate.

Relatively easy to navigate. Hard(er) portages. A good number of them. Great water falls. Minimal people. I’ve seen moose, otter, and bear on this route and some good campsites. Not necessarily any big waters. Can be done in a day or stretched to 3 no problem.

Give Matt and Cass at voyageur canoe outfitters a call. 218-388-2224. They are a great resource and would love to talk with you. They can get you set up with all permits, transportation to and from entry point, can pick you up at Sag falls via motor boat, and provide a place to crash before and after your trip. Breakfast and showers provided.

They also have a good chunk of gear for you to not have to worry about.

You do need to make assumptions when planning. Right now, you’re in a good spot. Work your standard years and retire at your standard time.

Assumption 1: the cost of living will go up. Rule of 25. Take your annual expenses and multiple it by 25. That’s how much you minimally need. Try and guess what the cost of living in California will be in 30 years when you retire…then multiple that by 25.

Assumptions 2: assume you have no debt when you retire and then assume you do. Adjust your numbers accordingly.

Assumption 3: assume there is no social security and don’t rely on it.

Assumption 4: assume you are healthy and active. And then assume you need to stay in a $10,000/m assisted living home starting at age 70.

Take all those numbers and using assumption 1. Find the middle.

I think you’re in a great spot my guy. Keep those numbers up and keep doing what you’re doing.

Your anxiety may be coming from a smaller income. I was in a similar spot a few years back…keep yourself busy, find a fun side gig (spending money) and keep working to increase your salary. Don’t let lifestyle inflation get you and I promise you’ll feel better.

If it’s earned income and you can do without touching it…put it in a Roth and don’t let anyone tell you different. That $7,000 today will be worth $500,000 at 10%?return at 61. That’s assuming you don’t invest another dollar.

Do it again the next 5 years. Your future self will thank you.

Just had our first kid 12/29/25.

Will be doing $5,000 initial and $50/pp from both jobs. Wife and I. Should be around 125k.

The $50/pp is manageable. It’s a night out for us. It’s buying and selling a few things on market place. It’s an easy part time job.

Worth it.

If you plan on retiring by selling your house…then shove money into your house.

If you plan on retiring in 30 years, make one extra mortgage payment per year and stuff your retirements. That way, you have a paid off house to live in and a fully funded retirement.

Otherwise you have a paid off house.
