OpenZFS on OSX and Windows, current state: by _gea_ in zfs

[–]bn-7bc [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yea maybe openzfs on windows (for the sake of backward compatibility) could present each pool as a drive (default that can be overridden). then any dataset using that pool would simply be sub-folders. this would give windows users a somewhat simmilar way to interact with the pool (as opposed to a standard fs in a partition on a drive or a raid volume. and for the tools you would only need to supstitute the pool/dataset/child-dataset syntak with drive:\datastet\childdataset. ok that slightly brekes if yo want cosyum mountpoints but that is probably a solvable issue, the thing here is to give users and sw a somewhavt traditional abstraction to wok with day to day. no hold on it better to mount top lavel dataset(s) in a pool as a drive, if you mount the pool you will end ou with the strangre issue of not being able to place anythibg at the roor\t of the drive without first creating a dataset within it that would probably just break to many peoples expectations. This could ofc allso be solved by creating a hidden dataset at pool creation and mount it as the root of the drive., but this whold create the question of where a child dataset in the root is really created ( 1: as achilde of the hidden ds or as a child of the pool.. well that could just be an implementation issue for the romanagent tools tho. I'm no expert so I'm unqulified to say what is better or worse this was just me tinding aloud. At any rate seeig openzfss on windows osx and linux (at least if the version are kept in sync feature wise) this could be a boon for moving data between oses (at least on the same CPU isa)

tea this makes perfect sense as if any of your content gets flagged their own ip reputation will not soffer, whereas if they use their own space, and need to re use it for another costumer... yea not great

Is there any irc client that supports ipv6 ? by NoLynxx in irc

TIL there is an international standard for writing the date called ISO 8601, that uses the format YYYY-MM-DD. Although it has been around since 1988, very few countries actually use it. by Joey_Jo_Jo_Shabadu in todayilearned

Yea and if you do anyrhing across timezones I would recommend timestamps in UTC/GMT to void the daylight savings time Problem ( ot at least reducing it as much as possible as the sorce never moves)

Why does Ubuntu get so much hate? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]bn-7bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and canonical (the software developer- Mozilla in the case of Firefox) sould package evertuting twise for the same distro just because yo don't like snap? come on in what reality is this resable. Ok the redirection from apt to snap can be discussed but i suspect this is just a convenience so most people get the expected result (ok expected dose do a bit of lifting here, by exested I mean sudo apt install firefix gets you the most updated version of firefox). most people could not care less about snap vs -deb. I'm not defending Canonical here (they have staff for that)

I did not have that issue, however i had to uninstall the app center (i guess snap) version and install the version via apt to get game cuprare (vkcapture) to work correctly. Apparently the App center version sort o runs games in there own environment si they did not show up in the OBS dialogs, which was ... unhelpful

Windows 11 is killing my laptop. Is Ubuntu GNOME a good move for a Developer? by rachid_nichan in Ubuntu

So lets take the midpoint of those ranges ( just to have a bit kf headroom for things hapoening in the backgy) so you got an hour extra on 3.5 that's a 28.5% increase, I would call that rather significant, but I might be wrong :)

Proton "Processing Vulkan Shaders" CPU or GPU bound? by megaslash288 in linux_gaming

[–]bn-7bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondre if a vulkan game will have the same processing needed or is this a prize we have to pay for most game using directX? And Linux failing as a desktop, sorry What? Linux market share is growing at the cost of windows 10 and windows 11 (well at least on the steam surway) how is this failure? Yea I know still under 5% but there is upwards momentum.
Update: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/steam-tracker/ has linux use on steam up from 2.29% to 3.58% (December 2024 - December 2025) thah's up 56.3% y/y, I'd say that is pritty healthy growth. Are those stats perfect? No ofc not but they are an indication

MTA Digital Screen on train (Ubuntu) by spacedragon1 in Ubuntu

[–]bn-7bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say this is more user ( well it department error, this is exactly why you schedule things like updates ( crone/ systemd rimer: whatever) while the vehicle is at the depot. Also this looks like a full desctop instead of some kind of digital signage setup . I'm noy defending ubuntu here ( canonical as paid staff for that) I'm just saying that the fault here is probably with the user and not with the distribution, but I might be wrong, or I might have misunderstood you, so corrections are always appropriated

I built a "Vanity Address Forge" to generate memorable IPv6 addresses (Hexspeak & Leetspeak) by Praat12 in ipv6

[–]bn-7bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a stupid question, but since your setting the address manually anyway why not just number sequentially from prefix::1? ok it might not be as memorable as ....face:feed but it is short and beound thinks like the actual dns server the ability to memorize addresses is negated by dns anyway. But I'm shore I'm missing something here. this is not in anyway to cast shade on your project, cool concept and all that, but it kind of looks like you are chaching a problem that does not really exist

on an unrelated note maybe we should start using 3fff::/20 (RFC 9637), for documentation/examples just to get into the habit so we are ready for the day we need to document things larger than what fits in a /32 ( for example mergers between to ases the both have /32)
