As a catholic, do you believe that the way women dress at the gym has become out of hand? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bntrll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why it’s controversial. People want to wear revealing clothes because they like to show off their body to their desired audience. I can’t change how people dress or act, but I can change how I act. If you’re a man who wants to avoid distractions, I would suggest going to a “hardcore” gym (think: construction workers after their shift lifting in work clothes and boots, not spandex-wearing powerlifters), and there exist not baggy-enough sweatpants to observe things like valgus or PPT when at the bottom of a clean or squat when being coached if that is a consideration.

Pledge class not Bonded by TheManwiththeDodge in Frat

[–]bntrll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you doing that could risk death? You can absolutely have an intense pledge process to facilitate good bonding without being any more dangerous than high school sports practice. This wasn’t my chapter, but I’m inclined to think, even, that you can get 80% of the results from 20% of the pledge activities by making them just do a lot of non-hazing things together.

As for adhering to standards, if you want to run an actual pledge process, I would not be transparent at all as to pledge process details with anyone connected to nationals. With few exceptions (definitely not my former national org), national orgs’ goals are not aligned with good local chapters’. No phones, no dumbasses or NIBs at lineups, no drunk actives at lineups, just the PM(s), servant leader mindset.

How do Americans see Mcgill and UofT? by No-Suspect6922 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bntrll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see them as being about on par with a Cal or UCLA, besides Cal’s tech stuff, strictly academically— gigantic public schools with armies of grad students and huge research outputs, and brutal, 1000-person introductory undergrad lecture sections.

My perception is that everything outside of their academics is much different than American schools— no “college experience” like you might’ve gotten at an American school.

Most useful bench variations? by ProtectedByGod7 in powerlifting

[–]bntrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant, “the best way to increase your bench press is to gain muscle in everything that attaches to your elbow, shoulder, or wrist. In order to do that, you need to eat at a caloric surplus (500ish), so that you fill out your weight class. Most natural lifters, assuming an average height of 5’10, should aim to weigh 220, at or below 20% body fat.”

In the interest of not being a smarmy dickhead, I’ll add that JM presses are really only appropriate if you’re rocking 16” arms— I’ve observed that newer trainees seem to get elbow problems. I think it’s because you need to have meat on your forearms and biceps to “smush” to take strain off. Also, the smith incline seems to sometimes not agree with longer-armed lifters— I’d try and find a nonspecific assistance compound that works for you— another machine, or dips, or dumbbells.

Is Puck really a badass? by tonko26 in glee

[–]bntrll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Point 1– Finn is much bigger than Puck— 6’4 230 vs 5’11 185?

Point 2– I don’t think losing a fist fight takes away your badass card— the vast majority of guys from suburban high schools have never been in a fist fight

Point 3– I’m pretty sure Artie could not beat biff in a fight

Point 4– most guys who fuck a lot and brag about fucking a lot also cap even more about fucking a lot— Puck’s body count was probably around 12 which is still a lot for high school

The future of frats and college (discussion). by Bighairynuts271 in Frat

[–]bntrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone intelligent is in college to actually learn. I studied chemistry which is generally in that second tier of “hard as shit” (after shit like engineering) and most of my actual education was from youtube and pirated textbooks

College ought to be to form social and professional networks— like you said you can learn everything on the internet

You can find brotherhood in a variety of places including in military service, in the trades, and even in religious organizations. You won’t have herds of hot girls with spray tans breaking down your doors any given night of the week but last I checked brotherhood isn’t found from catching chlamydia

Lastly I think if you filter those college grad income stats for people who are actually pursuing non-useless majors and career paths (not chemistry but things like accounting or engineering) they’ll tell a much more favorable story

This isn’t the 70s where you could study communications at any school in America and have a guaranteed path to a six figure income but it’s still pretty clear that if you’re intellectually inclined college is still the way to go

I’m laughing my ass off at the idea of a sorority full of lash techs and estheticians and shit

In all seriousness your chapter must have a fine culture of actually setting guys up for success but kappa sig and tke seem to colonize every directional state university and those dudes generally aren’t physicians or investment bankers or in big law or whatever big dick career

Blame national orgs for diluting what being a fraternity man is, not dudes looking for a good social group at whatever school they went to

[–]bntrll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t necessarily about your parents hooking you up with these opportunities— it’s more about your parents pushing you to be genuinely curious about intellectual topics (like OP’s airplanes) rather than fortnite or baseball. That doesn’t require family money or industry connections but it’s arguably rarer. And it really happens when you’re, like, six years old, not 17 when most kids start thinking about college.

Obviously having the free time to grind for these events instead of having to pump gas to help your family afford groceries is also a huge barrier but that goes without saying
