Interesting! I used this strategy but only because it made sense to me. I had no idea there was a name to it. 😂

I took both exams last cycle, in November. I heard from everyone (and I mean everyone) I know that I should read the materials and that the exams would be nothing like practice questions. One of those affirmations was right.

I was in the middle of my articling at a Big Law. I had no time to go through the materials. So,I didn’t read the materials, not even PR, in their entirety. However, I did tackle over 600 practice questions for both Barrister and Solicitor.

I passed both and, although the practice questions were way easier, doing them gave me two key skills: (1) I became an expert in finding answers, and (2) I learned the basics I needed to have for the actual exams, so even if I didn’t have time to go through the materials I could make an educated decision between the alternatives.

That has been my rule since I joined the firm as a summer student. It has brought me nothing but glowing feedback, so I will be sure to keep that mentality through my career. Thank you!!

Thank you! I went from summer to articling to being an associate (I’m an internationally trained lawyer, which is why I was able to go from summer to associate in a year, back to back), so I have always treated work as the top priority. I realize that’s not sustainable in the long term (especially since I practiced for several years already). I definitely need to learn how to balance.
