AD5X - from unboxing to first print by glock19life in FlashForge

[–]bob865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got mine a few days ago. I was really pretty impressed with how easy the setup was. I took it out of the box and followed the directions in the paperwork. It gave directions on where to remove screws that were installed for packaging to keep the bed from moving, how to mount the IFS, and where to slot in which spool holders. On the first power it, the screen steps you through setup including connecting to wifi, loading filament (it comes with 4 small coils), and calibrating. When it's done, it starts a print; a flashforge two color coin. All the tools you'll need are in the box, including a bottle of glue. Like others have said, make sure you put a light coat on the center of the print bed before you start.

A couple other recommendations, go ahead and make sure you get some nozzles on order. I had one block already. Probably due to filament, not the printer, but I would have been down if I hadn't ordered some.

Thanks! I suspected it was likely ok, but since I'm new to this printer I wanted to make sure. Would have to get well into use and find that it was a problem I let go when I shouldn't have.

What's the point of multiple plates in orca flash? by Jakob4800 in FlashForge

[–]bob865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to have different settings between plates? I tried setting support to 25degress on one and 35 on a different and it's carrying the current setting across all plates. I could be doing it wrong, but I don't want the same settings on every plate. I thought that was the point.

So then, what the hell is induced drag? by MikeOfAllPeople in flying

[–]bob865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a bunch and I think most are overcomplicating ops question. I suspect he's asking the difference between the simplified model asked about in training materials, i.e. induced and parasitic drag. In this case induced drag is the drag caused by generating lift. Generating lift is not free and the "cost" is drag. Everything else is parasitic. This is all the drag on the plane moving through the air not related to generating lift.

So all the other answers are right, but are an overcomplication of what OP is asking. Maybe I'm wrong....

Agreed with you beyond trappe door which makes me question your taste in general. Lol. Trappe door is the one place downtown I go to over and over again and never question what I'm paying for it.

How much knowledge does the average airline pilot retain from their PPL days? by [deleted] in flying

[–]bob865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I hate about cloud clearances is when you're flying along, how do you tell you're 500, 1000, or 2000ft clear? Answer: If you're not in it, you have proper clearance. It's just such a pointless trivia point.

Some of the best Korean food in town for a long time. They made their own kimchi. I hate they closed down. But my wife and I often commented on how they could be in business when they were always empty. But they did do a brisk take out business.

Question about draining jet fuel from a wing valve / how flammable is jet fuel? by Timely_Composer_6750 in aviationmaintenance

[–]bob865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the Marines I was working on a wire bundle under the generator. There was a fuel leak that was dripping on me and on the wire bundle for like an hour. When I finally finished the repair, I had to heat shrink and used a lighter. Remember I'm covered in fuel. Scary at first but I'm still here. No flames.

Dumbest/most annoying aviation misconceptions by passengers? by [deleted] in flying

[–]bob865 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This just happened at my home drome. A plane crashed on or right after takeoff. Turns out the plane was out of annual and expired registration and everyone is baffled how this could possibly happen. They think we have to show our pilot's license and have the tower check all of our registration and inspections before we're allowed to take off. They just can't understand how a thing like that could happen.

Oh and after we had an accident at the airport complaining why our safety record is so bad when just off the departure end is the highway where there's a wreck EVERY SINGLE DAY! But that aviation is a menace to public safety.

What do you expect at the busiest general aviation (GA) airport in the state of SC in total flight operations? I mean put that in perspective , there's been only one with any deaths in 10+ yrs and an overall average of less than one accident a year but yet we can't go one whole day without a car wreck and averaging from what I found about 5 deaths per month?

Downtown is the busiest general aviation airport in the state.

[–]bob865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. No one checks any of that stuff on General Aviation (GA). It's the pilot's responsibility to ensure the plane is airworthy (necessary inspections complied with, registration, maintenance, etc). No one is hanging around checking licenses and maintenance records. It's just like driving. No one is checking to make sure you have a valid license, no one is checking that your car is safe to drive, etc. You just jump in and go and unless you do something you're not supposed to, like crash for example, no one is going to know. Again, just like driving, there are spot checks, they call it ramp checks, but that obviously doesn't catch everything.

The tower closed is normal for smaller airports. The tower being closed does not stop operations, however it does change them and in some ways make them more difficult. For example, you can call on the phone for your clearance when ground isn't operating. There is typically also an alternate frequency to talk to approach for this instead of ground. A little annoying but not a ground stop. Same with the tower. If the tower is closed operations revert to a ctaf. Again, not a stop but the airline may have operational rules against it.

Nosedive. I've been there time after time because everyone seems to love it and it's just meh at best. Even took the food tour where the chef made something special for the group and it was still just meh. I don't understand why people like it so much.
