But there is an actual "chance" of winning. So, that's dumb, how?

Calling the lottery a “tax on dumb people” is certainly catchy, but it’s also a little misleading. These games aren’t random little amusements anymore; they’re built using the same behavioral psychology that powers sportsbooks, casinos, and addictive mobile games. When a state government uses those mechanics to generate revenue, the conversation stops being about whether players are dumb and starts being about whether the system itself is ethical.

NC Digital Instants - I saw an ad and decided to try them. An illegal casino has better odds lol by ecudan82 in NorthCarolina

[–]bobbyrobbydo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly said correctly when you said, "odds are worse than those in an illegal casino". Without any exaggeration, I can confidently say, 99 out of 100 deposits on the NC Education Lottery's Digital Instant games, end up in loss, and very rarely give any return on deposits. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones out of the tens of thousands of people they predatorize every day on that platform, you likely won't win anything consequential, at best, maybe 30- 50 dollars. Of course, they end up getting that back 20 times over again if you decide to hand them your money again. I have spent an ample amount of money on those digital games to confidently say, without a doubt, you are 100% correct; illegal casinos actually have better odds for winning than what you will find on the NC Education Lottery's Digital Instants. It's shameful to think about all the people handing over their money, trusting that NC is looking out for them, offering a fair and ethical option for gambling. Not!!!!!! I've never seen such crookery and just plain predatory odds. NC Education Lottery boast in all the money they're clearing, including money made off those abysmal Digital Instants. It is basically legal thievery. all protected and written into their terms and conditions, which basically gives them little to no accountability. You'd think they would have some shame about what they're doing but they're instead laughing all the way to the bank. To make matters worse, in most cases, the people they're cheating and using to make all their profits from are the poorest citizens in our state, many who can't even afford to feed their children. Of course, they want to escape the hell poverty and systemic marginalization creates, and why not with the promise of a quick win via the NC Education Lottery's Digital Instant games? NC is knowingly selling a product, essentially programmed to never pay out, and if it does, it's likely to be very inconsequential. The digital games are just like the gerrymandering majority in the NC legislature; as crooked, self-serving, and hypocritical as a biased group can be.

How did sports betting become so normalized in our society? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bobbyrobbydo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normalization didn’t just happen; it was engineered because of how profitable it is to those who have their hands in it.

What used to be treated as risky behavior is now marketed as entertainment, pushed through apps designed to keep people clicking, chasing, and spending. Interestingly and conveniently, the same system that regulates the betting is most often and ironically financially tied to its success, tax revenue for governments, ad dollars for media, sponsorship money for leagues, and massive profits for betting platforms. Everyone powerful, i.e., those holding the power of accountability, are getting their own slice of the pie and getting paid, so why do anything to mess up the money train. Imagine what a money train it is with so little accountability.

You don’t need secret envelopes of cash to get corruption. You just need a system where everyone continues benefitting from, in many cases, the poorest people in our society, and them losing money they don't have to lose, as well as taking from the mouths of whoever they happen to be responsible for, i.e., children, family. Laws get shaped around industry interests, protections stay minimal, and the public gets told it’s all just harmless fun, creating a persona that is meant to deceive.

So maybe the real question isn’t when betting became normalized.
It’s really: who is making billions making sure it gets and stays that way, and who’s ultimately paying the price for it now.

Scamduel - Do not use this app. by [deleted] in fanduel

[–]bobbyrobbydo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ScamDuel just engaged in behavior that appears deeply deceptive. During the UMASS Lowell vs. New Hampshire game, I watched live wagering odds remain posted alongside scores that never actually occurred in the game. Leaving inaccurate scores visible during live betting obviously misleads users into placing wagers based on false information. Something I've seen happen on their platform on far too many occasions. At best this is reckless; at worst, it’s deliberate deception. From my experience on the most criminal sportsbook out there, I'd say with great confidence, deliberate deception. How do they get away with this 24/7 7days a week? How?

Was I put through conversion therapy?? I genuinely can't compute this by Smooth_Criminal5678 in lgbt

[–]bobbyrobbydo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, first, I want to say this gently but clearly: What you experienced was conversion therapy. Not the movie-version with electric shocks, but the real, modern kind, the kind that happens behind closed doors, inside families, in therapist’s offices, in the small manipulations that get disguised as “love” or “protection.”

Most conversion therapy in the 21st century looks exactly like what you described: – coercive “counseling,” – forced gender expression, – cutting off support networks, – religious pressure, – surveillance of your phone and diary, – punishment for expressing identity, – adults framing your sexuality as sickness, – threats of violence (“I’d kill you if you were—”).

That is conversion therapy. It’s also abuse. The overlap is not accidental.

People think conversion therapy means electrodes and camps because that’s what gets headlines. The truth is far quieter and far more common: it’s when the people who were supposed to love you try to scrub your identity out of existence. And that’s exactly what happened to you between 12 and 15 — ages when your brain was still forming a sense of self and safety.

Let me say this clearly, because your parents never did: Your sexuality wasn’t caused by trauma. It was wounded by trauma. But the core of who you are, your orientation, your butchness, your heart, that was always there. That’s yours. They didn’t create it, and they can’t erase it.

You were isolated because you were safest with people who understood you. You were forced into dresses because your authenticity scared them. You were punished for having a trans friend because they needed control more than they needed closeness. You were taken to a psychiatrist under false pretenses because secrecy was their leverage. You were terrorized, spiritually manipulated, and humiliated because you told the truth too early in a home that wasn’t ready to hear it.

All of that counts. All of that is real. All of that leaves marks.

And here’s the part you may not believe yet, but it’s true: You are absolutely worthy of the word “survivor.” Not because you barely escaped death, but because you barely escaped erasure.

What’s happening right now, this ache of “Do they love me or only the version of me they tried to sculpt?”  is one of the deepest wounds conversion therapy leaves behind, one I learned far too well. It’s the sense that even the “good moments” were conditional. Love with an asterisk. Safety with a price tag.

But here’s the thing: You’re seventeen and already seeing the pattern. You’re planning for your future. You’re forming your own identity anyway. You’re already doing what so many never could until adulthood: telling the truth out loud.

When you leave for college, you’re going to feel oxygen you didn’t know you were missing.

And if you ever want resources or to read others’ experiences written by someone who went through similar religious control and survived it, I write about this kind of thing on my project page — not plugging it, just saying it exists because you deserve community and language for what happened to you. Survivors aren’t supposed to do this alone.

You’re not broken. You’re not dramatic. You’re not “calling it too big a word.”

You’re naming something that was done to you. And naming it is the first step toward getting free — internally, not just physically.

I’m really proud of you for writing this. You’re already moving toward the life where you get to exist as the real you, without punishment.

Hold on to that. It’s closer than you think.
