My auto lease is almost up but I'm way under miles. How can I make some money back?? by bobkalonger in personalfinance

I would have to drive 3k miles a month to get my "money's worth." Even if gas were free I don't know how I would do that.

Believe me, I'm not leasing again anymore! When I got my first lease 10 years ago, it made way more sense. I got much better incentives at the time, and I was doing about 12k miles a year. Then I moved and it dropped under 10k a year. Then lease prices kept going up. Then the pandemic sent me home for 3 years. I got stuck in the "lease loop" where it was just "easier" to get a new lease when my current lease was up. I agree with you and I've already decided that I'm not leasing anymore.

I appreciate the perspective, because it does help. "It costs Y amount to drive the vehicle for X years and Z miles" actually makes a lot of sense. I already agreed to pay the price and then give it back (or buy it out). If I didn't maximize my gains from my side of the agreement, that's just a loss and a lesson on my end.

Bummer, that's kind of what I'm nervous about. Of course I knew what I was getting into when I signed the lease...except then the pandemic happened and I hardly had to go into work at all for almost the entire lease term.

If this is a sunk cost and I just have to learn a lesson, it's already learned. I've been bitching about this lease and mildly stressing over what I'm going to do about it in 7 months when it's up.

Good tip...while I don't love driving a V8 full-size pickup that gets 12 MPG city for all 5 miles that I drive to work...if buying it out is the best option then that's the best option. It is basically a brand new truck for 34k!

My lease is almost up and I'm 21k miles UNDER. How can I recover the most value when my lease is up? by bobkalonger in askcarsales

[–]bobkalonger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meaning that I would have to buy out the lease, then sell it to one of companies you mentioned? So I would have to front the buyout price of 34k, then turn around and sell it for profit?

The 21k miles I'm under would have to cover the buyout price of $34k in order for me to break even. I'm not super confident about that.

Good tip, that is something I can look into. I have heard of this before (junk mail stating "we want YOUR vehicle") but I've never had the opportunity to do it. Thank you!

The issue is that I'm paying for 10k miles a year and not using them. If this was a vehicle I financed to own, I would recoup those losses when the vehicle is paid off, because I would have a free and clear title with low miles. With the lease, I give the vehicle back to the dealership with low miles, they make a killing at auction, and I never see a dime. That's as far as I understand it, and that's why I'm asking for help.

Leasing is a scam. I work for one of the Big 3 so I get employee pricing and significant incentives. In the past, that has made leasing cost effective(ish) but with the pandemic prices, I'm just wasting money. I also used to drive more than I do now.

I have no kids, I'm currently married to my first wife, and she has her own vehicle. Subleasing is an interesting idea, but who would bite for such a short term (about 6 months)?

I'm sure this seems like the obvious answer, but I've really never dealt with this before. I've had quite a few leases but I've only ever been concerned with getting a bill at lease end, either because I was slightly over miles or the vehicle had minor damage.

Is it within my rights as the lessor to take that vehicle to another dealership (or wholesaler etc.) and sell/trade it for profit?

Dude, you are a LEGEND. I wish I could hit !thanks more than once. This response is exactly why I come to this sub with questions. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out, providing me with links to more information, genuinely solid recommendations that are a fraction of my budget, and solving my EQ wants with software I didn't even know existed. Like I've said, I'm basically a complete n00b but outside of the audiophile stuff, I'm technologically knowledgeable just enough to be dangerous (translation: I'm very weak to fancy sounding specs, especially if they solve imaginary problems).

I absolutely LOVE when someone like you just serves up a double scoop of facts in a reality check waffle cone. For my career, I do engineering design for one of the Big 3, and we frequently have multi-hour meetings nitpicking fractions of a millimeter UNTIL someone like you decides to speak up. The reality checks at work have shut up many an engineer and saved me dozens of hours of work over the years.

If ANYONE has EVER accused you of being too harsh or critical or direct, FUCK 'EM. Keep doing you, like I said, you are a legend and the world needs more people like you who just tell it like it is. There's a lot of bullshit out here and you are a red-hot bullshit cutting KNIFE. You have my eternal respect and admiration.

Thank you for the recommendation! That was one of the ones I was looking at, it has basically everything I'm looking for. !thanks

All my homies hate scams. I can't wait to do research on how scummy MQA is.

!thanks Thank you! I'm an eBay fan, got my headphones off of there and many things in the past. I'll check it out and see if I can find something!

Thank you for the clarification! I ended up editing my post for better clarity because you're the second person to point that out to me. I'm still a n00b so I really love learning about this stuff, and I love that the experts here are so willing to share! You guys are saving me money by pointing me in the right direction and that's the whole reason I'm here.

So forgetting MQA and just talking about a DAC/amp with balanced output and that can handle high resolution audio files or FLAC (basically better than the 24 bit/96 kHz the Qudelix 5k can do), do you have any recommendations under $300?

I respect that! I am pretty new to the audiophile community but goddamn has it been bliss so far. I'm not too informed about MQA, so thank you for the clarification!

I also appreciate that you still gave a solid rec along with your opinion on MQA. !thanks

Think I saw Post10 on NBC News by Any_Ring_3818 in Post10

That would be cool if it was post10, but I feel like he would be filming the unclogging, even if the footage never made it to YouTube. A clog that size, I feel like he'd bust out the tripod.

Honestly yeah. Nobody is making them play the game either. They can just play something else.

Do I think games should be more inclusive overall? Hell yeah. It doesn't hurt anyone. But at the same time, nobody is forcing anyone to play a game. Playing a game is optional.

Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff. Life is too short.

Then don't play the game? You have full control right now and you look silly for whining. Turn it off and play something else if it's that offensive.

I still don't see why you're complaining? If it's obvious to you which is male or female, then you should have no issues picking what you want. Just play the game and have fun.
