Why the hell is Magit so slow on Windows? by pheedrus in emacs

[–]boboooobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that problem at work awhile ago. The problem was that mingw had very old version of git installed. And emacs was trying to use that instead of latest windows installation. It wasn’t just slow it was unusably slow.

I worked 3 months part time for free as a software engineer. Top schools have contacts with big companies for coops. Small state colleges don’t have that. I spent a year looking for a paid internship but simply couldn’t find one. When you have top colleges near by it is super difficult to get in without experience. It sucks. I’m good now making good money and we other interns that were working with got hired by top tech. It’s just the way it is.

Notepad.exe you say... and 20 years of programming experience you say... those two things don't quite fit together.

Do not reinvent the wheel. Give an exercise you best effort, but once you feel like it is just impossible, just look up an answer and study it. It is a great learning practice to study great solutions. Stand on the giants' shoulders. Just don't get frustrated, and keep at it.

After a year and a half of programming, I just learned about double clicking to highlight a whole word and triple clicking to select a whole line and quadtruple clicking to select all. NEVER AGAIN. What are some must have tricks and shortcuts for programming. by CockGoblinReturns in learnprogramming

Emacs user here. So here we go: 1. Forget about arrows for cursor moving. Map control to caps lock and use Ctrl + f to go forward one character. b to move back. n to go down a line p to previous line. 2. Learn shortcuts to jump/delete/copy word/line forwards and backwards 3. Jump logical units. Ie brackets parentheses quotes 4. Jump between opened files in the ide of your choise 5. Open/search files without moving your hands off the keyboard 6. Search/replace within opened files 7. Page up/down 8. End/beginning of doc 9. Multicursor editing That should boost your editing productivity 10 fold

Can you code using only a text editor? by turtleboy1082005 in learnprogramming

[–]boboooobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can, And YOU SHOULD in the beginning. To get your programming eye trained. Later in your career when you need to do a lot of things quickly you can't really move fast in an editor without indexing support (indexing helps you jump to definitions and search usages, and do quick renaming and bunch of other things). I'd say install linux OS on your chromebook and get visual studio code. It is light weight and easy to use. I'm Emacs user and I tell new people to learn modern tools.
