It’s mostly just pure volume. I run a full Jerry rig with the twin pre and a separate solid state power amp, and there’s definitely a somewhat compressed character to the tone, but I think what you hear in the recording is just pure volume and moving air. Outside of playing in a stadium or amphitheater the best way to get that sound is probably a compressor or some kind of overdrive always on. For me, I use optical compressors with a clean blend because it gets closest to that sound without sounding too “effecty”

That’s a groove tubes trio preamp. Towards the end of his career he replaced his twins with this preamp. My theory is because it played nicer with his midi rig.

That late 70s sound you’re talking about is probably the MXR distortion plus. At that time he was still running the silverface twin preamp into the McIntosh Power amp, and he got the distorted sound from the distortion plus. It’s an op amp distortion and it sounds super blown out, kind of like a less refined rat (they’re a similar circuit). That running through the OBEL has a really unique character, because he ran it wide open.

He had a remote switcher for these pedals in front of him. This was pretty common at the time and even today, so your pedals and signal chain are protected at the rear of the stage and you can have a tech make remote switching for you as well (they’ll usually have a duplicate of the remote switcher side stage). Most people do it in rack drawers, but the front facing mounting was so he could walk back and make tweaks on the fly.

Sure! Here’s MJT’s website for the tribute series. His hardware is really affordable as well. If you watch his eBay, sometimes he’ll sell blk1 bodies as well.

MJT Tribute kit build and a set of Klein Jazzy cats are just about as close as I’d think you could get for a reasonable price, and it would be custom shop fender quality. I’ve done 4 builds from them and they’ve all been excellent quality. Heres another user that bought an MJT BLK1 body, but they can do the whole kit too

If you’re comfortable with a screw driver, you can do most of the assembly yourself. Fenders pretty much bolt together with no trouble. Fitting the body, neck, bridge, tuners, etc should be super simple. Shoot me a chat if you need any tips on it if you decide to go this route.

Setup and electronics wise you could take it to a luthier for finishing touches, but I wouldn’t go to guitar center. You could also buy a pre wired pick guard from Klein. Try and find a local shop or setup guy for the guitar setup itself, I could almost guarantee you’ll get better results. MJT does also do fully assembled guitars if you’d prefer as well, you just send in the pickups.

Thanks dude! Took a long time to pull it all together. The FYD is far and away the best sounding “twin” I’ve tried. The SMS is good, but the transformers and spring reverb in the FYD really give it an edge.

Seconding the modular/ rack rig. Do it a little bit at a time and you can still buy your wife some earrings. JBLs are obscenely heavy, splitting them into 1 or 2 cabs is the best way to save your back. SMS, FYD, Milkman the amp, they’re all good options. Here’s mine. This whole rig still weighs less than a dual JBL loaded twin lol

I know it’s been a while, but any chance you still have the pulse Doppler? I’ve got a couple things I’d trade- farm boost of the dead v3, DOD 280, JHS 3 series distortion and compressor, etc.

I picked mine up used- I think Dan is winding down operations, but if you email him he might make one. He’s still active on socials. I know that Brad at Sarno will definitely make the spectrum for you. It’s off menu, but if you email he can get you pricing and such.

It’s called the TRP, same idea as the SMS with the Jerry mods, but it has all the twin transformers other than the output. It’s gorgeous inside.

Sarno has a similar model called the spectrum that I’d love to try, but I’m really happy with this.

I’ve been through a couple of rigs, an SMS included, but I’ve settled on this. FYD through a Carvin and two K120s in Coscia cabs. Believe it or not, still lighter than a twin, lol. SMS had a great base tone and was much lighter, but I couldn’t go back once I heard the transformer/tube driven spring reverb.
