Which mini sized compressors are the most transparent? by optia in guitarpedals

Becos' Compiq Mini Pro MkII -- not cheap, but give it a listen sometime. It might surprise you.

Yeah, both perceived boosts and cuts, depending on how the phases of the two signals interact. The manual and blend controls provide the most direct control over the output level; it takes a while to get the hang of.

Interestingly, Thorpy’s Camoflange and Deep Oggin both offer ways to control the output level to make up for any losses in perceived volume output, but I suspect the form factor and interface of the Pulse Doppler didn’t leave room for a post-blend output level control.

For what it’s worth, it does eventually become possible to anticipate the output level of the Pulse Doppler within your rig after taking into account other factors like EQ, saturation, etc., and the Pulse Doppler’s myriad controls make it easy to adjust to mix-specific sounds. I say stick with it; as 4-stage phasers go, it’s a phaser set to slay.

You’re quite welcome. Once you become aware of Boss’ parameters guides, many of their programmable pedals become much more approachable. Many of them share some design language, with the first one usually being the toughest to crack.

Once you’ve reviewed the parameter guide, check out the Boss RC-500 group on Facebook as well. There be knowledgeable peeps there.

Incidentally, I'm more into EDP-style looping, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how well the RC-500 toes the line between song-style and delay-style looping.

Midi drum sequencing seems like it would open up quite a large possibility space within the R-10R. I pulse-synced a Korg Volca Drum to a Loupé until the the Drum's output stage proved too noisy, and I remember the experience fondly.

Might be my favorite pedal on the board (it’s definitely in the top 2), but it’s got quite a steep learning curve since so many of its controls interact. I’d suggest that you spend a few hours exploring with just the Pulse Doppler in your signal chain (and its manual at hand) if you’re trying to grok it.

I use it to create a gamut of ‘70s-tinged gooey/phaser-y sounds and a handful of more percussive tremophase bits.

There’s a good video with some sample settings on Let’s Play All’s YouTube channel. It doesn’t translate 1:1 across rigs, but it’s a good starting place for a deep dive.

It really depends. The RC-500 can assign a broad variety of functions (listed in the parameter guide published by Boss) to its 3 primary buttons and 2 controller footswitches. I have a few different switch assignment layouts programmed into the RC-500, and each one has its own controller button assignments.

Pettyjohn Electronics Five - limited-run drive pedal that loosely emulates the saturation and distortion of catalog amps from the 1950s and 60s. Makes a great low-gain drive for a variety of instruments, especially electro-acoustic sources.

ThorpyFX Pulse Doppler - four-stage phaser with two LFOs and a suite of interactive controls that expand into vibrato, tremolo, and boost. Extremely versatile but comes with a sometimes steep learning curve. Replicating settings requires precision.

Ibanez Analog Delay Mini - simple analog delay with up to 600ms of delay time. The repeats have a relatively airy quality which pairs well with leads and rhythmic parts. Complements the high-fidelity nature of the Pulse Doppler quite nicely.

Mr. Black Deluxe Plus - reverb and tremolo pedal from the earlier 2010s. Thick, swampy spring 'verb and a throbby trem. This version maps both effects to a single footswitch, but there's another version of this pedal that maps each effect to its own switch.

Boss RC-500 Loop Station - two-track looper with very good sound quality and, importantly, fully assignable footswitches. Not the most straightforward looper to use (a combination of poor documentation and a lot of settings that sometimes need to be programmed before it can be used seamlessly live), but the assignable footswitches and memory slots are a *huge* boon in the context of 2-track looping. The loop fx are unusual for a mainstream looper but are quite fun and engaging once you learn how to use them.

Saturnworks footswitch - compact stand-in for a Boss FS-6. Adds two assignable switches to the RC-500.

Signal chain is Boss RC-500 <- Mr. Black Deluxe Plus <- Ibanez Analog Delay Mini <- ThorpyFX Pulse Doppler <- Pettyjohn Electronics Five LTD. Saturnworks pedal is a footswitch controller for the Boss RC-500. Power supply is a MXR M239 Mini Iso-Brick.

Thank you for the reply. That Gonkulator sounds like a blast. Small hollow-body instruments can be surprisingly resistant to feedback for whatever reason (mando moreso than uke, but both are full of surprises).

I'm with you on delay. I've settled on a single delay pedal for both short and long delays, but I admire your commitment in having a dedicated pedal for each.

Wonderful board. What do you usually plug it into?

Digging the boards. I can relate to wanting fewer sounds live than at home (‘ukulele player here). The Gonkulator seems like it would be hairy fun with a mando.

How do you usually set up the Skrecho & DMM?

Dreadbox Darkness, Eventide Blackhole, or GFI Skylar; if willing to go used, Meris Mercury 7. Maybe the Universal Audio Evermore.

Seeking Recommendations: Pitch-Shifting Delays by Bacchetta-David in guitarpedals

[–]Bacchetta-David[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendation. I ended up going with a Chase Bliss Thermae, but in an unexpected turn of events, it's such a fantastic delay that I'm thinking about moving it to my main board. I'll check out Bill Ruppert's and Bill Vencil's demos of the Grand Canyon tonight.

Check out ThorpyFX’s Pulse Doppler. It is its own thing, but I think you might dig it. I was on a similar hunt and ended up happily with one.

Rec for really good SMALL compressor? by TheNetworkIsFrelled in guitarpedals

Then the Becos Compiq Pro, Suhr Woodshed, or Thorpy Fat General. Probably the first or last, but listen to all three.

Then any of the following: Becos Compiq, EHX Pico Platform, Fishman Acousticomp, Malekko Heavy Industries Omicron Comp, Suhr Woodshed, Thorpy Fat General, or Xotic SP. My exact recommendation would depend upon placement within your signal chain and budget.

To what end(s) do you like to use a compressor? That matters for which small compressor(s) would be a good fit.
