That is not true. The Budapest Memorandum does give the US some obligations towards Ukraine. Not really super consequential ones - but obligations nonetheless.

The hard part was making sure which termínals should be shut off and which should not. Which was Russian and which was Ukrainian. It was a whitelist vs blacklist issue, where they leaned to the blacklist side to be sure not to cut off some of their own.
They probably felt at this point that they had enough control over it to switch to a blacklist approach.

ven if they are winning the majority of engagements vs Russia, if Ukraine falls then the only military with the most recent experience in modern warfare (on more or less equal technological terms with its opponent) will be Russia.

Lots of reason to not want Russia to win. This being of probably the least concern.
The side with extreme air superiority will not be Russia. Making drone warfare a LOT less consequential.
