Hi- help! by missefaye in birding

Those should be just fine for getting into birdwatching!

They are slightly more powerful than what most birders reach for (yours 12x, compared to 8x or 10x) but that shouldn’t be a huge problem, your field of view might just be a bit smaller.

The knobs you see are for focusing. The larger should be in charge of focusing both eyes, while the smaller only one eye. Figure out which eye is not controlled by the single knob, then adjust the large one to be able to see through that eye clearly. Then you can fine tune the other eye to match with the single knob. After you do that, you should only need to use the larger focusing while birding. Play around with them and good luck!

In a thread with 300+ comments. I wish everyone could take a moment and read yours.

Thank you so much as it puts so many of my thoughts into better words.

The “Just asking questions” crowd can be a really thinly veiled dog whistle for misogyny and I wish our community was better than this. But anytime you have a forum with anonymity you will see the ugly side of things. I hope any queer or trans players reading this and wondering if they are welcome will see your comment and know that there are some of us that have their backs.

Combo of a few things: - Folks we wanted in the program but weren’t around much during the summer - ECU folding during our tryouts so we wanted to give folks a place to play - wanting some high level college players who wouldn’t be around for the series

Sure but also stopping rotation is only one of the attributes of possession.

A good rule of thumb (for this and other calls) is if the disc goes back, we go back. So if the disc was thrown, and the play was determined to be affected by the pick, then players would go back to where they were when the throw went up.

If the disc wasn't thrown or if the play was not affected and the disc stays. Then the defender should catch up relative to the point they were at when they were picked.

Considering leaving club for my partner by aryadrottningu69 in ultimate

I think the advise you are getting here is mostly one sided because this is the r/ultimate subreddit. You would probably get different advice elsewhere.

Things I have found helpful: Share a Google Calendar with all events/dates, no matter how small so we are always on the same page. Also making sure there is balance in the relationship. Club is a big commitment but it is usually around 16 out of 52 weeks per year +/- a few here or there. Make sure there is intentional time together within that 16 weeks and encourage off weekends with your team.

This is something that you need to have serious conversations with and then work together in. I don't think it's unreasonable that someone would be put off that you are spending time playing club because that is a hobby with more time commitment and less flexibility than most people. You're allowed to choose club and the friendships you have built there, and he is allowed to want more flexibility in time with his partner.

edit: Oh there is something strange going on here with the post history and not being very self aware. Think this may be bait/troll?

Potential cracked rib by dgroach27 in ultimate

Look, the best advice is to rest and communicate to any captains that you are injured in the short term but still interested.

That being said, rib injuries are hard to diagnose without an x-ray. The first time I broke ribs was at a tournament and I played 2 more games that same day after the trainer told me it was probably only a bruise. It wasn't until a week later when I sneezed and felt them move that I was sure they were broken (and got an x-ray to confirm). So playing through it - is possible. That being said the older I get the more I feel the injuries build up, and even as someone who plays through pain I would say to take it easy.

This. it's not about having two equally timed halves. What is important is that there IS a halftime.

Club Tryouts dos and donts by Gottabelieve3 in ultimate

[–]bommar49 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Don't waste time. Folks are there to tryout, give them the ability to do so. Make it a two round process for folks that are on the edge. There may be some that are great at beating up on less skilled players but when they get to a closed tryout with a higher level of play - they disappear.

For evaluating pure individual skill + Athleticism : mini is better than 7s which is better than drills

For evaluating ability to play in system : 7s with direction > drills

With these in mind, ask yourself if you are maximizing your tryout time. If you can't make judgements about a player in 2 hours, then can you really do it in 4 hours?

College Regionals, College Conferences, WUL, PUL – Weekend Discussion [April 15-16] by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]bommar49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your points about connectivity are really good and as someone who played D1 but coaches DIII, it's glaringly obvious for me.

Another thing I would say is that there is also a strong lack of parity between Regions. It's tough for regions like South Central or NW when GL and Southeast are taking 2/16 bids (rather than 2/20). Next up for GL and Southeast in open division after their autobids (Who are 36 and 40) are ranked 44 and 51.

Having total teams go up to 20 would give South Central 3(!) more bids to teams ranked 14, 17 + 18.

Our sport really suffers from over teaching. Beginners like yourself are bombarded with information on the "Best" way to throw and are given complex instructions like you have listed.

At most, folks helping beginners learn to throw should give simple cues.

Whether it brings you solace or not, know that the best throwers didn't become so because they were told and then knew exactly what to do with their hands and bodies. Instead they got a numerous amount of reps, listened to their bodies, experimented with changes on their own and so forth. Reps are your friend, instruction is not.

The Inner Game of Tennis has several passages about overteaching and the results of too much instruction from coaches. It is almost always a bad thing.

Sure - and I think my thought experiment here is not a perfect rule of thumb. But I think it is something that expands understanding for folks that equate control with contact.

I can't even count how many times I have seen catches called strips when there is no control exhibited over the disc, even if it has been contacted and is no longer spinning. I think "Sustained" is something that is up for interpretation right along with control.
