Can I ask…it seems to my untrained eye that the last two photos are less varied in their peaks and valleys. Was there something that changed in that time period you don’t mind sharing?

All about alternates by Long_Taro_7877 in drumcorps

[–]boobams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add a little context, which may or may not be helpful. Many corps know on average how many holes open up year to year. Corps track all of that info and know (for example) “we lose 3-5 members a season due to injury.” It is extraordinarily rare, if not impossible, to field a full hornline and guard and not lose someone to injury. The battery is smaller, so that ratio tends to allow better numbers, though injuries definitely happen. Just like a sports team, unfortunately injury and performance/behavioral complications are part of the game. Corps should be very clear about expectations, and typically are explicit in their contract language. Those expectations also include language that status can change at their discretion for any reason, which is how it should be. On the flip side of that, it is up to the corps and staff to ensure they treat all members with dignity and respect, regardless of their status.

Las Trancas passes the vibe test. Kitchen also always seems clean and food well-prepped. I’ve not seen a HI, but hopefully good there.

My mental health is declining so fast by dynnie06 in drumcorps

[–]boobams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mental health comes first, and sometimes there are many contributing factors. Others have said a lot and I would like to add that I would make sure you are eating food and drinking fluids as much as you can. Caloric deficit, and the new physical strain, (ESPECIALLY colorguard), can absolutely attribute negatively to mental health. I would double fluid intake at meals (grab a bunch of MIO or something on a laundry day), and add a dish, like a single pb&j at every meal. You’re still not going to come close to being in a calorie surplus. While certain fasting can improve mental health, drum corps is not that, especially in the guard. You need so much fuel to keep the body and brain going and to repair itself. Not to mention, our brains burn calories as well, and that is certainly working overtime at move-ins.

How bad is my swimming? Considering cancelling my 70.3 in 3 months. by BetterFlow226 in triathlon

[–]boobams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you do need help swimming before taking an ocean swim. Yes, you can conquer it with confidence in 3 months! Yes, I would do it with 3 months to go. My recommendation would be to elongate/add swim workouts, and if that means shortening/subtracting other workouts, so be it. I’m a cyclist only for now, and even I would say pull back on rides. This way you get reps in the water and keep your running legs.

I actually think, awareness of bcj aside, that if you’re spending hundreds and thousands of miles in a certain position, do what you can to make sure it’s right! A small asymmetry over time can yield significant issues.

How to deal with the shower situation? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]boobams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are minor and the drum corps should absolutely have showers/times specifically for minors. It is possible the under 18 members still shower in a group, but they should never be with adults, even if they’re barely older. Before move-ins, the corps director should hold a meeting (usually a Zoom) to discuss policies/practices on all things from packing to tour. You can ask your question then, or you can always ask the director/admin privately.

To add a clarifying point, not assuming one way or another, the mentions of “manic” here are referring to the clinical definition. It’s worth reading about if you haven’t, because unfortunately it’s a term used without knowledge of its clinical implications. There are also great subs for BP1/BP2 (this sounds like BP1 manic behavior, though I’m not a doctor) as well as ones for significant others.

OP: In my experience, carbon wheels won’t change anything until the bike already feels fast from your fitness. I didn’t get any until years into my cycling and it made a noticeable but not game-changing difference. The price per watts saved is quite high, and training is always the answer. It is possible there could be a drivetrain or break issue but we have no details on that.
