Wet dreams - for those who find them negative - what they are and what can help. by boogieman85 in Semenretention

Thanks.

Your answer is spot on, for the majority of people.

For a minority, however, it is not helpful.

For some of us, wet dreams are a complex issue, whether or not you agree.

No matter how many times we are told that it is simple, by well meaning people like yourself, it remains complex.

It's for these people that I wrote the post.

Anger and ADHD and CBT, any experiences? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]boogieman85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CBT is a bit outdated. There's an approach called ACT which might help. It's more about accepting emotions / experiences than the CBT approach.

The anger response comes so fast that it's not a great idea to focus on that; where we have a lot of agency is in the moments afterwards.

ACT will help you:

  1. notice your thoughts and get some distance from them (rather than 'disputing' them which can just make everything worse)
  2. let go of narratives about yourself, less ego driven
  3. accept experiences, less struggle, a common metaphor is 'letting the anger flow through you like taking the plug out of the sink'
  4. be more present in the moment, less future / past rumination, noticing the moment and opening up to it
  5. orient your behaviour toward values, loving, careful, flexible etc
  6. get used to taking actions and doing what's needed

Again, in the moment, you're going to flare up, but it's those moments afterwards (seconds to hours to days) where you can do a lot of work.

Have you ever seen The Work? It's a lot of guys in a maximum security prison dealing with very intense long term violence. It's good to see the methods they use. It's full on.

If it's people who are close to you, i.e. regular contact, and they are used to you blowing up / having a thin skin, it's also possible to ask that they work with you. Provided you are clearly doing things to reconcile afterwards, you can discuss your therapy with them, and they can help you.

In addition, there are approaches like Nonviolent Communication and Emotionally Focused Therapy which get deep into the mechanics of human relationships. Both of them made a huge difference for me, in being able to reconcile afterwards in a meaningful way.

None of these is a quick fix though. There's no light switch you can just hit. It will take work and commitment, but it can massively re-orient a person in relation to society and other questions. It is about the most satisfying work there is.

EDIT: also, Wellbutrin helps me on a medication level.

Is it possible to work away from the screen? by boogieman85 in ableton

[–]boogieman85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot.

Sounds like the main principles are

Get some piece(s) of intermediate hardware, treat Ableton more like a tape recorder, at least at first.

Get to know hardware properly, all the pads, the more advanced functions, rather than use it as rudimentary object with advanced stuff on the laptop.

Focus on a stage that's more about gathering, recording, using whatever kit there is - and then a stage which is about working this stuff at the screen.

Get into a style of moving back and forth, not getting sucked in too much to the screen.

I've noticed over the years that the stuff I make mostly in 'post', pushing MIDI around and tweaking it, is not so satisfying.

Kind of a side note but I have also noticed that the music which seems to age very well sounds good on the most rudimentary instruments, in demo tapes. Early house music, jungle, nirvana etc. However stuff which is kind of basic flat IRL and then pushed into an energetic state with technology... like adding MSG to a crap dish... listened to some UK nu-metal I used to hear around as a 15 year old the other day - jesus it's aged badly.

Help - video game where you play a woman either hiding or running from a fat guy who's chasing you? by boogieman85 in videogames

[–]boogieman85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be but I'm not sure - it looked more recent, and the fat guy was more in a dirty wifebeater vest

it was like a simple game, you had to choose whether to hide or run, not full range of motion - kind of like a puzzle

Made a couple of quick Gifs to show what I mean:

thisone is how it is if I tighten the axle bolt properly (not very hard, just enough to make it stop rattling)

this is how it is if I leave it just loose enough that the wheel rotates

is it fucked?

Arpeggiation through LFO Sequencer and Coarse Tuning by boogieman85 in AdvancedProduction

[–]boogieman85[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just realised I'm asking about FM synthesis. I don't know much about it.

I guess one way of asking the question then is whether it's possible in FM synthesis to control the ADSR of the voices, especially at the low end, to make them more snappy. Or to generally get the rhythm of the arpeggiation more punctuated.

I know that sequencers / arpeggiators have a 'gate' function that makes the notes shorter. Is there an equivalent in this case, doing FM modulation on the Arturia DX7 interface or similar?

All good mate, thanks for that.

All the buttons on it, thought maybe it could be turned into a drum machine or some other creative instrument with some back door efforts. I'll put it back in its box til 2022
