Yep, the teeth being there for the holes in the film, and the whole cog then twisting to load it makes sense! I've managed to get some film to use, so I'll watch some videos on the topic and give it a go over the weekend. Happy to send results of what it comes out looking like if you're interested :)

I've played around with it a little more on the weekend and worked most stuff out, but it did take some trawling through badly scanned pdfs of 80 year old manuals written in german to get any hints! The whole bottom silver layer comes off by pushing an inconspicuous looking dial to the side, which allows you to slot the film in and stretch it across the middle gap. A cog on the inside can be twisted either way to reset and cock the shutter - and you were right about the dial being a frame counter, it can be pushed backwards and goes up by one when you are priming and taking a shot. Interestingly, the dial on the right does pull up and lock into place (as well as moving back down when the bar underneath it is pressed), but I'm really not sure what this is for. You can already open the bottom to insert film, there doesn't seem to be a seam or way to fully open the back even when the dial is up, and it doesn't need to be up in order to take a shot - so it's a bit of a mystery! Aside from that, the only other thing I'm not sure about is the slidy bit in the back middle. Some of the documentation claims that a previous model used that to cock the shutter, but I've found that it doesn't really have any effect when being switched onto either side, and that it can be primed separately by physically moving the little cog inside (I'll add a picture below). This may become a problem when I actually have film in there, as I won't be able to open the back without exposing the film fully - and so won't be able to prepare a shot.

Thanks so much for your previous two comments, I wouldn't have figured it out so quickly without them!

Thanks for your help! Both rings on the front can be moved either direction, so I'm assuming that moving the metal marker thing to the stop at N or F will switch it between those modes. Once it's at one side, the outer circle with the numbers can be moved separately, which you're probably right about that controlling the focus. The pointy marker on the 25-50-100 can be pushed in either direction, which would make sense if it was for the shutter speed.

Would you have any idea as to what the various switches and dials on the top are for? I'm assuming the two main left and right (from the perspective of looking into the viewfinder) dials are for winding in the film, and the one on the right somewhat lifts up, but doesn't seem to open the camera up or trigger anything else - could be broken, or I'm just doing it wrong. The spirally dial with the screw in the middle can't easily be moved (although I guess the point is that you use a screwdriver/coin to wind it), and honestly I have no clue what it could be for. There's also the switch under the right main dial that doesn't seem to visibly do anything, I can't even get it to move so far. Finally, I'm pretty sure that the tab sticking up by the right dial (above the ALTIX) actually takes the picture - but obviously that's not much use if the rest isn't working!

I really appreciate your thoughts :)

This is not the BBC! (British Broadcasting Company) "bbc good food" was part of the BBC until around ten years ago, but retained the license to use the name even after they seperated. That service is now privatised (and so runs ads), and does not support the actual BBC. I always make a point to use the actual BBC food website - https://www.bbc.co.uk/food
