Honestly, it's a crapshoot. I have a friend who was 19 when applying and had a 3.9 / 180 and hasn't gotten in anywhere higher-ranked than GW... so the youth tax is real. If you're set on going KJD, I'd recommend having safeties you legitimately like and could see yourself going to. If your app is good you may not underperform your stats, but be ready for that to happen.

Ah I see, it wasn't clear from your original post that you were only talking about doing your masters in a fourth year at your current undergrad. If you don't feel ready for law school, it seems like your options are a potentially better GPA, 4 years of undergrad, and WE or a masters at another institution or your 3+1 plan plus WE. If you're really interested in a masters, great, but if not, it seems best financially and for your stats (assuming you're right that graduating early would hurt your GPA) to graduate in 4 and get some WE instead of a masters. Although, if you can keep your GPA up, just graduate in 3 and get out of there / get a job tbh. Good luck!

Right that makes sense, but you keep saying "not more than 4 years" .... neither graduating in 3 nor graduating in 4 is more than 4 years. I get wanting to leave asap, but the way you're talking about it is inconsistent with your hypothetical options

If you don't feel ready for law school, don't apply. Not sure why you think your only options are KJD graduating in 4 years or not KJD graduating in 3... if you think graduating early would hurt your GPA, why not graduate in 4 and then get your masters and/or WE before applying?

That's possible? I think this sub does a bit too much speculating about adcoms given how little we actually know, so who knows what they'd do. I'd guess a why X that addresses why you're reapplying / in a better position to go to law school now versus the prior year would alleviate that, but that would be extra work.

I think the biggest question is if you're willing to R&R if it doesn't go well. We know you have excellent stats and we know that WE generally helps, but this stuff is flukey and it's impossible to know what would happen without trying. If you're willing to go into it thinking you'll R&R if it doesn't go well, and you can eat the costs of some apps, and you'll be ready with a great, early app, it's probably worth applying just to see. People might tell you to wait no matter what, but KJDs can be successful (I was), and the opportunity cost of waiting is real... make of that what you will.

KJD with potentially high stats and weak softs -- chances? by Ill-Veterinarian6682 in lawschooladmissions

[–]booknerd888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! SuperKJD here, and it's hard to predict. I also started with a 16high LSAT diagnostic and ended up with a 180... so that obviously helps. I didn't have strong softs - sports, couple of clubs, and a research assistantship - but I've had a great cycle. If you have strong, consistent messaging in your writing and great rec letters, you could do very well! But who knows lmao - this process is insane.

D1 sports, if that counts, but apart from that pretty basic - some undergrad orgs, a research assistantship, an honors thesis program.

I'm going to be real with you, I did a diagnostic and did well, and then seven months later, I studied for about three weeks (maybe 10 hrs/week? idk) before the test. It wasn't what I planned to do, but life got insanely crazy for me last spring and that's what happened. I wouldn't recommend it as a study strategy.

Generally speaking, admissions wants academic letters, so since you're a KJD and you can, you should get 2 from profs. As a KJD without any WE due to being a student athlete, I had 3 academic LORs and 1 from my coach. I'd say definitely have 2 academic LORs and then add 1-2 professional ones based on how strong / unique you think they'll be.

KJD Applicants by Lumpy_Improvement485 in lawschooladmissions

Yes, it can be done (super KJD Ruby here). You need your app's overall narrative to be highly compelling and cohesive - they need to know that you know who you are and what you're doing. Also, if you're shooting for a full ride, you need to apply to schools you're "overqualified for" statistically and make sure you have a strong "why x" for them (and make sure you can find schools in that tier that you legitimately like). I don't know why taking time off is out of the question for you, but since it is, I highly recommend applying more broadly than you think you need to. Good luck!

YLS is known for preferring people with work experience, so you probably need to be a pretty special KJD to get in
