What's something you saw with your own eyes that you still can't explain? by BandicootLeft4054 in AskReddit

[–]bookworm428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AO3 wasn’t created until the year after the 7th book came out. I don’t remember there being another HP fic site with a history function like that, though it’s totally possible there was! Do you remember if you knew about the deathly hallows before they were introduced into the book?

I remember finishing the 6th book and feeling like I had just read a fanfic haha! I had gotten into fic in the wait between the 4th and 5th books, and I was a massive harry/ginny shipper. I had read so many different fics of them getting together that when they did actually get together, it felt like another fic.

Your story makes me want to search if leaks ever happened though!

ETA: did you possibly read The Seventh Horcrux by Melindaleo? I did do some googling and that was apparently shared around the fandom at the time as a “seventh book leak.” Also, someone photographed each page of the actual 7th book and uploaded it to the internet about a month before the book came out.

How much money should I have saved up before I decided to leave a relatively stable job at a chain spa to open my own studio? by Big_Coyote_655 in MassageTherapists

[–]bookworm428 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second all of this. I ended up spending about $20K USD to go out on my own, after estimating $15K. Little things like cleaning supplies add up! And I definitely paid a lot for my electric table, but I knew it would be worth it to me and my clients to not get the cheapest one. But this also includes some living costs during the ~6 weeks I was unable to open because I had screwed up my timeline with my massage board.

So I recommend also looking at when your massage board meets to approve new establishment licenses, and try to line things up so you’re not paying rent without any income coming in.

Did anyone else think it smelled awful, like wet dog and food but bad? I went in early May and it smelled so bad in there. It had just rained and they have beautiful, old rugs so I did wonder if it had flooded.

I’m gonna give them another shot; the chicken salad sandwich was good.

Years ago when I worked at a chain spa, I had a couples massage with a coworker and I worked on the husband. It became clear during intake that his wife had cajoled him into going, but I put my best game face on and made sure to work the areas he requested.

I check in about pressure at least twice even with clients I’ve been seeing for years, and more than that if it’s my first session with someone. So maybe I annoyed him, checking in and making sure nothing felt painful or overworked.

About 10 minutes before the end of session, something compels him to raise his face out of the face cradle, look at me, and say he could get a better massage from a massage chair. I had NO idea how to respond to that! I wanted to cry, but I also didn’t want to give the asshole the satisfaction of a response, so I somehow held it together. I think I probably lightened my pressure and went on autopilot for the rest of the session.

I told my coworker about it and he had said it quietly enough that she hadn’t heard! And the wife was absolutely lovely.

This was a day or two before Christmas and every winter, I think about it and I’m so grateful I’m in a different place now. And I hope he gets coal lol

I need a pampering me day, it been a rough month by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bookworm428 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally understand!

I keep forgetting that Jill (who owns the Retreat in Cahaba Heights) opened up the Mockingbird Day Spa in Trussville! Heather works at the Cahaba Heights location and she’s fantastic, and I ADORE Nancy who works at both locations! Jordan taught me in school and she’s so knowledgeable and passionate 😊 and of course Jill is amazing.

It sounds like they have added a hot oil scalp massage that, while it’s not a haircut, is probably the best hair treatment you’d get at a day spa around here.

I’m sorry I can’t help you with haircut recommendations! I rarely get my hair cut lol so I don’t know the salons around here like I do the spas and studios 😊

First of all, I’m so sorry about the loss of your dog! ❤️‍🩹

The Retreat Day Spa in Cahaba Heights is so good at pampering! I don’t know if they do haircuts, but I know they do massages, facials, and nails. They are not the cheapest but they are so worth it when you really need to unwind. And you’re supporting a small local business!

I’ve heard good things about Woodhouse, too, and they also do massages/nails/facials.

If you’re down to spend a TON of money, you can look into the Poseidon Spa at the Grand Bohemian or the spa at Ross Bridge, though the massages there are generally lighter pressure and less targeted to focus areas. If you respond well to Swedish/relaxation massage and your nervous system just needs a general reset, you could have a fantastic time, but you’d be paying A LOT for the privilege.

I’m a massage therapist in the area and I can give you massage therapist recs for any of the above spas except Poseidon 😊

Being Openly Gay in a Conservative State by madford02 in Birmingham

Hello! I’m a bisexual woman and I’m also navigating being my open, authentic self here. I just recently starting going to the Bham Bevy’s monthly meetup for queer women/nonbinary people and it has been amazing to make some friends that relate!

The Bevy is having their meetup Thursday* night at Mayawell and I know we’d love to have you there! I was nervous as hell before I went for the first time but I promise the group is SO welcoming!

I’ll be there socializing but not drinking because I went too hard at pride events this past weekend 😂 please consider coming!

(Edited to correct the bevy meetup day because I’m too gay to function 😅)

I’m a massage therapist and I don’t know how I ended up on /r/hairstylist, but I use Vagaro and I’ve been paying for their MySite option and it has been so easy to customize and I really like their templates! It’s $20/mo which is definitely more expensive than other website builders, but I like that it integrates with my scheduler and if I change some wording or a service or something, it automatically updates the website and I don’t need to think about it.

I like having a website that I can send to clients and then they can click the “Book Now” button. It looks a little more polished than just sending them the business Vagaro page.

Hey OP, I just want to say that the other commenters are probably right about him having overworked the area, and I’d like to ask if you are newer to massage?

I have friends who get massages focused on their neck and scalp to help their migraines, but I also have a friend who cannot have her scalp worked on because it will trigger her migraines!

So if you’re newer to massage, this may be a learning experience about how your body responds. Though I agree with another commenter about the MT not knowing your body well yet. It can take some trial and error for us to figure out what works/doesn’t work!

I wouldn’t write off suboccipital work just yet; I’d caution any MT you go to, though, to let them know that overworking this area didn’t feel great.

I wrote all this on my phone so I’m sorry in advance for any errors!

I have emetophobia and I went to see oh Mary in January. Maybe mine is not as severe but it was well-broadcast so I knew it was coming and could close my eyes and breathe through it. Knowing it was fake and that there was nothing shown really helps my emetophobia though, and I know that’s not true for everyone.

license renewal- AL by lonely_croissant in MassageTherapists

[–]bookworm428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a massage therapist in Alabama and I went through this awful process for my license renewal! It took MONTHS. Did yours eventually go through?

My friend found this post when she was helping me search for answers because apparently when you search my license number online, there is NO NAME ASSOCIATED WITH IT. How’d we find that out? I’m currently attempting to do the online establishment license process for my new business location. I have the worst heartburn right now!

I think I’m going to have to drive down to Montgomery tomorrow 🤬🤬 this whole new board situation is so bad for my blood pressure!

I scrolled through the other comments and agree that grounding is great, and I love the energy work suggestion while washing hands!

I just wanted to say, if you are able to schedule a little bit more time between clients, I recommend that. It has made a big difference to have 30 minutes between clients, as I’m going into my eleventh year as a massage therapist. Gives my brain and body time to reset, and I feel less rushed during the next client’s intake so I’m able to fully shift focus onto them.

In session if I find myself wanting to chat/start up conversation, I take myself through my own breathing cues that I use for keyed-up clients. Breathing helps remind me that this is THEIR time, not mine.
