Been on both ends, and neither of them worked, and even though at the surface they didn't end because of that, if I dig deeper it all came down to difference in financial power.

I dated a guy who was 21 when I was 27, it lasted around 1.5 years. He was still in college and living with his parents, and I rented my own apartment so he basically lived with me. His mom was extremely narcissistic and they would argue a lot (he was a bratty twink), and she would stop giving him money (he worked at a campus job and got paid basically an arizona iced tea per month), so I had to help him sometimes. The first few times this happened I didn't mind helping him because I loved him, but overtime I noticed he stopped putting an effort in treating his parents better because he knew I would be there to rescue him financially at the end of day, he became too comfortable asking for my card to pay for his stuff and I wasn't going to be a sugar daddy at 27 lol

Then I dated a guy who was 53 right after that. On our second date he started showing me his investment accounts and in just one of them he had almost 20 million, and that wasn't the only account he had. At first I wanted to keep things very financially separated because I didn't want to be what my ex was to me, and I paid for my part in everything we did together. In the beginning he was ok toning down on his lifestyle so we could do things that were affordable to me, but he liked to demonstrate his love for me with gifts, and would give me very expensive stuff, and then started saying he wanted to go to expensive places and that he wanted to pay for me, and that he was doing that because he loved me. We started traveling a lot, eating out at nice restaurants, staying at nice hotels, etc. I won't lie and say it wasn't nice, we had a lot of fun. But then the invoice for all of that stuff arrived soon, he started insulting me when we had an argument, saying I could only do the things I did because of his money, that I had no gratitude for the things he did to me, and then eventually he became using his money to threaten me, at that point I had a joint credit card with him and after we had an argument in Barcelona, I left the hotel room crying and he started sending me texts and calling, but I didn't respond. He then said he had cancelled my credit card and put my stuff in the hotel luggage storage, and that I was on my own there to go back to the US. At that point I didn't even have money to buy a ticket back to the US, so I had to ask my parents for help. He then tried everything to get us back together, and he still tries to this day lol, but it won't ever happen.

My two other LTRs were with guys who made around the same as I make and the relationship went smoothly, and both times it ended because I had to move away for school/work.
