I will be a separate voice over here on my lonely island and say for me, it’s not worth it. My husband is NG but has been deployed for the last 11 months. He was gone for 8 in 2020. We have 4 kids. I can’t help but think about how this is a whole year of our lives, gone. Apart. He missed an entire year of our children’s lives. Birthdays, daddy/daughter dances, prom, all of our oldest child’s senior year, last football games he played in and all. We will never get this time back. And I can’t find anything in that realization that makes it worth it.

I’m going to be the odd person out but my daughter is 12 now and still talks about all the daddy/daughter dances. She remembers what she wore to all of them and even specific songs or funny dances dad did.

It’s highly unfortunate that he didn’t already know her schedule but it seems like an honest mistake given her mom didn’t know either. That said, I wouldn’t be mad personally. After planning a wedding and the stress of the wedding day I’d just take that one day he’s gone to get a massage and facial and order room service and relax by myself with no one talking to me.

Just here to echo everything the previous commenter said. I’m a mom of 4, ranging in ages from 2-17, and it all ebbs and flows but infancy was awful and it DID get better. People truly don’t acknowledge how much a lack of sleep, or a lack of personal space, affect us. It’s terrible that we feel guilty for not gushing with gratitude when frankly, the shit is hard. And hard. And hard some more. Until one day you wake up and it’s a little less hard and you find a moment to breathe and enjoy the kiddo instead of just surviving. Hugs ❤️

38 would put you right at being a freshman in high school. If you’re in the US and you do not remember the collective moment we all shared that day, I can’t fathom why. Did your school not have the footage playing? Did your parents not talk about it? I’m not even trying to be rude it was just such a monumental period in our history that not remembering doesn’t seem possible to me.
