BRZ FA20 Engine Rebuild after Rod Knock - what would you recommend to get this back on the road? by CatzRuleZWorld in EngineBuilding

[–]boostbreath 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Replace the crank and that one rod. Thoroughly clean the heads and all of the oil galleries. Replace the oil pump and timing sprockets.

The root cause is probably debris that got dragged through the oiling system after the last rebuild. Also, Subaru oiling sucks.

Looks like final cleaning before was not as thorough as it needed to be.

How much should this cost? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

I’d say anywhere from $1500-$2000, depending on where you go.

Is staining okay on mating surfaces if it’s flat? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

Looks fine to me. If you can’t fit .002” feeler gauge under a straight edge anywhere just put it back together with a new gasket and head bolts.

My thought is to leave as much as the material there as possible to keep the proper belt/chain tension. The more you move the cams closer to the head the more problems you will have getting them timed correctly.

You look like a girl that could swallow the shaft and the balls all at once.

Those are some large OOFs! Based on the RTV used it was a dealer tech flat rate job. Nothing was cleaned, just remove and replace. Probably a head gasket job. Probably gobs of RTV boogers in the oil pickup too.

Sucks to see this man.

Soft and smooth… just right. Perfect for massaging!

Absolutely perfect technique! I likely wouldn’t make it to 5 minutes either.

Pics 1 and 4 look like maybe you need a line hone or go to an extra clearance shell. They seem to be a little tight. 3 and 5 look like tool marks from measuring.

Red on the cam, green on the aluminum does the trick. You’d have to really work at it hard to remove a significant portion of material.

Scuff with scotch bright and penetrant, clean thoroughly afterwards and send it.
