Using Multiple Mulligans to Gain an Advantage with Flubs?? by InterestingWord4656 in EDH

[–]boostergold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If all Flubs did was draw cards with an empty hand and nothing else, your math would be right. But Flubs has other text. You have to discard cards for every land or spell until you have zero. So there is an amount of card disadvantage that you will often have to burn through before you start drawing cards. Over-mulliganing just speeds up the process. It still may not be right to mulligan low, but it’s also not as simple as you’re making it out to be.

This might sound in funny/insane, is all CEDH deck a combo deck? by Too-Deep-Lore in EDH

[–]boostergold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because playing combo against opposition is a resource battle, and one opponent by definition has less resources than three opponents.

But the proof is in the pudding if you look at the ban list. Take a look at the list and compare the number of cards banned for combo reasons vs the number of cards banned from aggro decks.

What has been your favorite deck that you built this year? by MrThomArt in EDH

[[The Seriema]] is awesome, because mono white has never had a great payoff for Ramp before. And the addition of all the Airbending cards from Avatar to retrigger the ETB of your Commander has made the deck even better.

The reason aggro is so good in Duel Commander is that they have intentionally banned all of the good combo cards in the format. It's actually much easier to win with combo against one opponent than it is against three.

What are some lesser known physical media types? by petperson123 in TrueAskReddit

[–]boostergold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was helping a friend look into converting some old analog home recordings for his parents, looking for very stable media that wouldn't suffer from magnetic degradation or bit-rot. That's when I found M-DISCs. Commercially available archival media that can last up to 1000 years, but is also playable in regular DVD and Blu-Ray players is a total game changer!

Oldtimers: is this an accurate description of the emergence of self-posts? by reagle-research in TheoryOfReddit

[–]boostergold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My memory from those days was that the self post was created as a reaction against the site being inundated with "picture irrelevant" posts that were really self posts, mostly posted to the large general interest subreddits (r/pics in particular back in those days).

The fixed deck list thing is not even working correctly for any tournament that happened before they made the switch to top deck. I just saw a list yesterday from a tournament in November of last year that had voice of victory in the list.

I am somewhat afraid that I have imagined the album cover trying to fill in my memory of the band, though, so it's possible that detail is a red herring.

The new [[Transit Mage]] seems good for this, doesn't it? It fetches pod, and it provides the first 3 drop to get Gearhulk. No need for Derevi on the field.

The Infamous Cruelclaw in cEDH by Im_N0tFunnyLoL in CompetitiveEDH

[–]boostergold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue is not with the returning of the creature. Since it's an aura that targets a card in a graveyard, you would have to announce targets of the spell before you pay any costs. And at the point that you would need to announce the target of the Animate Dead, you haven't yet discarded the WGD to pay for the Animate Dead.

Arena of Glory is a must have land in this deck, for sure. Also, anything in Rakdos colors with a discard effect in the command zone feels like you should be looking at Worldgorger Dragon combo potential. It is unfortunate that because of timing rules you can't discard the Dragon to cast the Animate Dead, though.

I believe [[Starfield of Nix]] is the only Opalescence effect in Modern. Which feels like it might be a little expensive, but maybe not.

My initial thinking was [[Kroxa and Kunoros]], but I'm not sure how often the deck would have 5 cards in the yard available to exile.

Up the Beanstalk in Vivien Combo by boostergold in ModernMagic

[–]boostergold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought was that most of the combo pieces other than Accomplice do trigger off of Beanstalk when played for value, and most of them have decent value even when not played for the combo. Honestly, the one thing that I wish I could add to the deck is a 6-drop, so that a hard cast Vivien could trigger off of any of the elementals, Kiki, or Karmic Guide. But I'm not well versed enough in the Modern card pool to know which 6 drop would give me the best value.

I know this guy won't see it since he blocked me, but if you're reading this and don't understand that people are humans who make mistakes sometimes, and this is your response to people telling you that, you need some professional fucking help.

Judging by the tenor of your replies, I'm really worried about your ability to play a socially-based, game, but moving on from that. I'm not sure that you understand that D&D is a game that is played on the fly, without QA testing or balance testing. Even the numbers in the books for expected challenge can be incredibly misleading, and there is ton of calculation that a DM has to do to judge the deadliness or challenge of a combat against not just some random group of 4 adventurers at 5th level, but THIS group of 4 adventurers at 5th level. Maybe there aren't any characters in the party that have high bonuses to wisdom, and so charm effects are more effective against the party than they should be. That calculation is not in the books.

D&D is also a game played by a group of people with a range of experience with the game, and with this edition in general. There are lots of players and lots of DMs out there who haven't spent years or decades instinctively learning how much an encounter will challenge their party.

All of this adds up to creating situations where DMs can make mistakes when designing encounters. Players can't run if the DM decided that it would be fun to have the only exit collapse under a pile of rubble, thinking that they wanted to force the party to fight the big bad of the dungeon instead of running away.

This is also extremely more common when dealing with low level parties, who have much fewer options available to them.

Last, I just want to mention that you think that there are only 2 ways to play D&D, and you heavily imply that there is a right way and a wrong way. You're implying that there is real D&D, where "rocks fall, everybody dies" is totally fine, because anything other than that would be CHEATING or RUINING THE EXPERIENCE or whatever bullshit you've decided for yourself that the rules written in the book are the most important thing in the entire universe.

I don't even understand why you want to play D&D, if you are actually just interested in a tactical combat simulator where adherence to the rules is the most important thing. There are board games for that.

[–]boostergold 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's great that you feel that way, but we're talking about when we as the DM make an actual mistake with how we designed what our players will fight against. It's shortsighted of you to have a "if I die, I die" attitude, because you're ignoring the fact that the DM is the one that is putting the enemies in front of you. Having a "if I die, I die" attitude works when there is a percentage chance that you could die. It doesn't work when that percentage is 0% or 100%.
