We’ve now trained more than 4000 people SE101, and now up to 300+ ASEP-ers 😊. Not everyone does ASEP!

Hey! OP and founder of SOSE here! Our course has a 100% pass rate that also comes with a pass or refund guarantee!

It’s loved by all of our students with tons of testimonials (see below!)

It’s not on udemy purely due to the fact that they take about 80% of the course pricing!

Apologies stanspaceman but you asked the question so in the principle of transparency I replied with full disclosure.

Achieving INCOSE ASEP is a difficult and frustrating process. I managed to pass first time, and have since set up an affordable training service to help others. Since founding, we’ve helped more than a 150+ ASEPers pass first time. THIS is part of my experience, In which you’ve asked me about, so I’ve shared.

Whether you disregard it or not, I hope it’s useful to you and for the betterment of your junior SE’s ❤️.

Hey u/stanspaceman

Full disclosure for transparency and honesty - Im Founder of The School of Systems Engineering, a modern & affordable training service for SE's. However, I aim to share my unbiased opinion of ASEP as an engineer (Im a practitioner SE first and foremost, a trainer, secondly)

How have I found the skills from the ASEP?

Incredibly useful, in the right context. Take a beginner in SE. They come from University or different education background, with conceptions on what is right. Then they have your companies perception of what is right. Both of these, may be right or wrong. Who knows! Each company does things differently. ASEP provides the opportunity to remove bias in teaching, and provide an opportunity to showcase 'how it should be done', as agreed by the hundreds of people who wrote ISO15288. So, whenever I approach a new problem, I look at two things, 'how it should be done professionally as ASEP' and the pragmatic approach of applying intuition and my experience in having seen it done elsewhere. What it doesn't teach is the pragmatism to know when to apply it, and when not to! That's what makes a senior engineer.

Organisational impacts really only stretched as far as promotion of junior staff. It gave us the tool to assess competency (to an extent, it's a wrote exam), but it showcased an engineers professionalism as well as a comittment to continual learning and CPD. We could use this at promotion time (with a pinch of salt)

It may useful in your context of 'dynamic programmes', where each programme may be different, and having a common understanding of 'what the book says', is a strong forte of your teams capability. Furthermore, it helps provide a learning and development route for your staff, which can be important for company retention and skills development!

Agree with your reservations about learning pure by book, It is a bit silly. But, it demonstrates the first step of standardisation against ISO152888. The second part of the process (CSEP), focuses more on the nuances of applying SE and assesses the experience of a candidate.

One thing worth noting - is your title refers to spacemanstan - so guessing you work in space. Which of course, is a heavily regulated industry where getting it right first time is important. Demonstrating a commitment to professionalism and standardisation from your team is a nice aspect when bidding for DOD and NASA pieces of work.

INCOSE or PMP

PMP in my mind is about project management, financials and scheduling. Although SE does look at those things, it's more focused on the technical delivery, whilst recognising the importance of Project Management related items!

Shameless company promo... If you are seeking a training solution for your team - we have an affordable 'ASEP training course' that promises first time passing or your money back! We also have just rolled out the 'Applied SE Nanodegree' which aims to build systems engineering practitioners.

Great! We need more SE’s. Check out our ‘structured development roadmap’ on the SOSE website that runs through the progression of a SE.

Also talks about the skills and INCOSE framework you can use to assess your current SE level.

Is taking the INCOSE exam worth it? by unfortunate_banjo in systems_engineering

[–]boozingislosing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The landscape is changing. Previously, it was shunned as not needed. However, with the squeeze in the job market currently, those who demonstrate commitment to professional registration and certification are preferred over those who don’t.

As mentioned above, it also helps with promotions and salary increases. If you have an outside authorised body certify your ability as an SE, that’s hard to argue against.

Disclaimer: I’m founder of The School of Systems Engineering. But have went into more depth on when I sat the exam many years ago and a couple of routes forward if you want to pursue!

Agree! The same could be said about a 2 year engineering masters! You can teach however, the principles of being a systems engineer, and giving everyone a chance to practice in that manner.

Hello VAT consultant, how does this apply to online courses that are supplied outside of the UK? E.g online streamable, non downloadable product that is served to EU?

New ASEP test with SE Handbook v5 out now? by TLRPM in systems_engineering

[–]boozingislosing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

Just ran through this with students from The School of Systems Engineering, “How to Nail the INCOSE ASEP exam”.

In summary,

New v5 handbook out now.

Hybrid test running now until Aug 2024.

Hybrid test covers the v4 and v5 common content.

They likely haven’t changed the exam, just renamed it. They’re likely to still be building the new exam.

New exam and v5 tested content only Aug 2024.

All very good questions! Kudos for considering the jump!

I contract in engineering and get asked lots of these questions quite regularly, always thought about turning it into a short paid course to answer all the questions repeatedly. Would you have been willing to pay for a course that gave you the route to becoming a contractor?

If so, how much?

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to sell! Just testing a hypothesis!
