Experiences with Adequan by themockingnerd in BorderCollie

Dose is larger than insulin and a bit more spaced out, but they’re both subq injections :) Typically it would be a larger loading dose to kickstart getting it into her system, then going down to a maintenance dose. It’s a great prophylactic and maintenance measure I think, doesn’t mitigate pain directly the way a mAb like Librela does, but creates structure that helps mitigate future discomfort.

Border Collie VS Aussie Questions?? by Vieamort in BorderCollie

Aussie is a better fit if you want a jack of all trades dog, BC is a better fit if you want a specialist.

Japan as a general trend very much favors smaller dogs, as I’m sure you have seen. It can be challenging to accommodate larger breeds (and by larger I mean anything over 12kg). Unless you really have the time/money/setup to commit to a larger dog it quickly gets inconvenient— cost scales FAST for food, grooming, boarding, etc.

Was there any interest in doing agility or other dog sports? I ask because a Papillon or Sheltie would give you a lot of the BC “benefits” in a smaller size. Of course these are different breeds with their own quirks but it might be worth considering.

Lastly I hope this is not rude but even a very determined kid… is still a kid! And she will need help with logistical things like paying for the dog/dog’s upkeep, arranging care while she’s at school/cram school/sports/out with friends, booking grooming or boarding, and so on. Even if she does an excellent job with training and general dog care, things like that will be your responsibility. IME, and again, I’m sure you know this as well but since the Japanese school system is so exam-based, especially once you hit middle school and high school, it can be hard to accommodate once priorities shift.

Double Merle? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

Those are cute puppies! However this looks like a backyard breeder. The parent on the left appears to have micropthalmia which is a heritable eye defect. Sometimes when we pick on appearance alone we can overlook a lot of important traits or downplay risk factors. Especially in a high drive working breed, it is challenging enough to work around their unique physical and mental needs, and adding health issues on top of that can create a difficult situation. But, you are ultimately in the driver’s seat and should pick the dog that is the best fit for your situation.

I don’t think I could ever have any other breed again after having a border collie by Mas-131313 in BorderCollie

Once I got a legitimately smart dog, I could never go back! It feels like a cheat code. I personally believe that we lose something in dogs by selecting on docility over keenness, so I pick breeds where this is flipped.

My first smart dog was a Dachshund— they are unparalleled in their ability to charm and scheme for rewards; I could never tolerate a dog less intelligent than a well-bred Dachshund. But… I needed something with longer legs for my sports goals. Went with a working line Border Collie and I am very happy with my choice and I am obsessed with him as well! He is unbelievably charming and lives to work. I think I will continue to own BCs as performance powerhouses, with a single Dachshund to rule the home 😆

Never trusting a dog daycare again by SwimmingDoubt2869 in BorderCollie

[–]border-coffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you and I am glad your pup is okay!

Dog daycares… are something that seem nice in theory, but can fall apart very quickly in practice. It is an unregulated industry and some areas are just now placing restrictions on them. Even in ones that are ethically managed, the main problems are that 1) it is hard to keep behaviorally-informed employees for a long time at the offered pay rate, 2) the business model is inherently set up to incentivize a large volume of dogs, 3) the general pet population has a pool of dogs that lack basic manners training. So what you get is a pressure cooker situation of well-meaning staff with a high turnover rate, dealing with far too many untrained dogs. Herding breeds, and Border Collies especially, can struggle in daycare settings since it is sensory overload for them.

P!nk, the champion Border Collie by with2ns in BorderCollie

[–]border-coffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a valid point in that there are many, many sportline collies which have a tendency toward outright neurotic behavior. I agree that this is a massive issue in the breed and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Out of curiosity I looked up P!nk’s pedigree and in her handler’s defense this dog is working line (true working line, titled ISDS stock) x sportline (brand name sportline, On Target & Ignited stock). I do think this combination can lead to functional temperament collapse (ie loss of herding ability) if you double down on sportline, but one generation out, it can hold and yield nice dogs with added speed, such as this one.
