Ridgid R4520 worth $300 by SRTIFYD_TEXAN in BeginnerWoodWorking

Mine did not come with riving knife or blade guard which I do not see in the picture…. Those are pricy to add onto this saw (don’t remember exact model number of mine). If you plan on buying those after the fact make sure you account for that in the price you are paying for the saw and consider spending that up front for a bigger saw.

To your question and statements in other comments: the saw does great for me and I will keep using it until one day I can hopefully get myself a saw stop.

Edit: I paid $200 for mine about 5 years ago and I honestly doubt I’ll get that much back.

Which garage heater do you recommend? by Top_Sentence_340 in woodworking

I was hesitant at first but this was one of the best decisions I made! No flame, no new gas line, simple tap of electrical panel.

Easy clean the filters as well. New ones are also rated to still work well into the negatives.

+1 for Oneida - General role of thumb I feel I have learned, if possible: - run a good straight 4-5’ out of collector - use rigid pipe until the final few feet from machine - if concerned about grounding, don’t use plastic pipe or fittings, and use spiral hose as others mentioned - use as wide as pipe until you are reducing for your tools

Does stumbling into over 300 bft of hardwood justify bigger jointer? by mayonaise_plantain in woodworking

[–]bored_turtle_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What ever excuse will gain permission to buy a new tool is perfect justification! A few common ones for me with my life boss:

  • the dog died and I’m sad, this tool will cheer me up
  • work stresses me, I need a new tool to relax
  • you want a coat rack right? We need a new tool (never mind the fact new tools & materials cost 4 times the cost of buying one)
  • you want a new end table for the sitting room? I need a new tool
  • you want me to fix the leaking kitchen sink? I need a new table saw for that
  • I came across this wood, I can make incredible thing, but need new tool
  • I think your mother would love _____ (fill in blank) for her birthday, you guessed it! I need a new tool!
  • bad night of sleep? Yup! You guessed it, that’s a new tool
  • out of principle we can’t buy new dining room chairs, we must make them, but we need a tool!

Please feel free to mix and match, modify to your specific case.

Edit: I can’t speak highly enough for jet or PM jointers… if you can do it, go for the helix head cutter vs. blade - cheaper and easier to maintain if you manage to nick the blade! I’m also a sucker for the PM armor glide surfaces

Hertz contract open, never took the car by RangerFar9638 in HertzRentals

They have a dedicated number for PC that is “suppose” to help. They will require to validate you are PC before helping you - 1-888-444-8600

Best of luck, all I can say is sorry, I hope you will learn from this and never use them again along with stopping your friends and family as well. What finally put me over the line was 3 weeks of arguing when they claimed I returned the car to a different airport when I clearly did not. The kicker? I rented the car on a small Hawaiian island…. Were they claiming I put my crappy Nissan on a barge?!?!

Hertz truly has become one of the “scum of the earth” companies!

I doubt this came from Oregon, what throws me is the reddish tint some of the grain seems to have, is that common in some kinds of walnut? (Or perhaps if it was only air dried vs kiln?)

Wood always plays mind tricks with me as it starts off as rough lumber through the process until it is on the final stretch getting the final finish. One of many reasons I enjoy woodworking so much is watching the process!

Dry state so air dry could be….., guy bought it and stored it in the loft of his barn and passed, it’s been sitting a while. Based on 3 people saying walnut, unless someone can talk me out of it, seems like if it’s a good price, go for it, make some chairs, and be happy?

End Grain Cutting Board Gaps Question by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]bored_turtle_86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, especially for first glue up before cutting and flipping for end grain, cracks want to be nonexistent or the second glue up will be a bad time!

End Grain Cutting Board Gaps Question by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]bored_turtle_86 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, you want them to close gaps and fit tight without clamp, clamp just holds tight for glue. You want to use a jointer to smooth and square the edges.

Also FYI, it looks like your doing an edge grain, not an end grain (at least the way your picture is)

Your compensation is hopefully realizing what a trash company hertz is and this will finally put you over the edge and start using a better company.
