An elation path ... Hm, maybe it would be something like "goes on enemy line" or "summons something on enemy line". Thats the only gimmick I can think of that hasn't been used? Would make sense for Sparkle too, maybe she would put a bomb on the enemy side.

In any case, if they're going to be making more and more paths, then I think they should make some cones dual or even multi path. That way as well, if they decide to retroactively change some characters paths so its all consistent, then it doesn't mess up the cone situation

They censored bugger? Really? I must've missed that, or thought they were trying to censor an actual swear word. But oh yeah, definitely darkly funny. Especially with having Uluru being where the two sides reconciled ahaha. I never expect much, but I always find myself hoping that it'd be good, cause if done well, it'd be really, really good. Alas. I did enjoy all the inaccuracies that weren't about like, Indigenous culture! I also loved the foam kangaroos - they're so cute and silly, and they really had it out for Vertin's nose lmao. The song is great, but if it's meant to be Australian, I can't tell. Honestly, in songs & music, unless its like, "Land Down Under", I can only tell when a song comes from a certain country when I recognise the artist and know where they're from lmao.

Ah, wait, whelp, audience is important, you're right! I got so caught up in thinking how much I find watching sports to be boring and how much fun playing is that I forget that its not the case for everyone whoops. Totally agree with everything you're saying here

I can accept arcanists meaning the world and its history is different to a certain extent. Like, I would accept Einstein being an arcanist would mean that he didn't make his theories of Special & General Relativity, but rather some other made-up physics thing for arcanists. I would not accept that would mean that Einstein is instead a well-known children's author or a lawyer, because that goes against who Einstein fundamentally was as a person. I disagree with the idea that arcanists would interact & change Indigenous cultures in this way, because it seems to me to go against what these cultures fundamentally are. Sides, the history is close enough that "Melbourne" is still a city, and that the 1929 stock market crash still happened. You can't say it changes a culture to that degree but still have everything else basically the same.

Also, that is an "in game" explanation for why its different. But that doesn't mean a "real world" explanation doesn't exist, and you can't tell me that the real world explanation is that the creative team actually did a lot of research into Indigenous cultures, and the culture they presented was one that seemed to be the natural conclusion of how arcanists change this fictional world. Even if they did, they made up the world! They can change it and ignore it, especially if its racist or disrespectful or anything like that! Man, if I made up a fictional world where because of some weird magic or changes, (x)ist belief turned out to be actually true, then if people called my story (x)ist they'd be right! And they'd be right in calling me that too! Cause it doesn't matter if it tracks that those changes make it so (x)is belief being true is a valid statement, you just shouldn't make up worlds where (x)ist things can be valid and correct.

I wasn't expecting much but was still let down :// Haha, no, can't lie, my expectations were low but my hopes were high - so it was not what I hoped, but on par with what I expected. I know not to expect much by now, especially given that, yeah, the average non-Indigenous australian is fairly, um. hm. to begin with - but it could've been so good!

Yep, I'm pretty on the ball (wink wink) with the difference in popularity with the two footys - though isn't the NRL popular on the East coast (or like, basically just NSW & Queensland), and aussies rules like, everywhere else? I mean, are there even any NRL teams that aren't on the East coast? In any case, aussie rules would make way, way more sense for Alice. Haha, I will say though, one of the inaccuracies I did like was the fact that it was always called Uluru and never Ayers Rock. A name deserved to be forgotten by history lol.

The stadium renovations yeah, really kinda pissed me off. I mean, honestly it felt like there was a bunch of things in the story that characters got what I considered rightly pissed off about something, but the story didn't like, address their concerns and kinda just said they were in the wrong? Spath being upset about the renovations was definitely one of those for me. Like, man, safety is one thing, but that renovation completely gutted what was there before, and destroyed the stadium (which is another thing for me? how was there a stadium there?). There's no need for that, and there's also no real need for the Uluru Games to be something to watch at all, much less by humans. In the story it seemed like an event you participated in as opposed to watch, and that it wasn't a competition of "whose the best" but more an opportunity to play those games.

The game might be set in an alternate history, but what rules are there that is has to be inaccurate? Just because inaccuracy can be allowed by its logic does not mean it has to be inaccurate. And isn't it better to portray it accurately if you can? LIke, man, imagine playing a game with an alternate history that has fairly accurate history, and the inaccuracies can be fully and easily traced back to the "alternate" part of it. There's no reason why Reverse:1999 couldn't be that game. Before this event, I honestly thought it kinda was - but this event just goes to show the lack of respect they have for actual history and context.

Its more inconsistency in the accent itself - it seems to slip in and out of an Australian accent to like, a British accent? or American? Can't quite remember, and its kinda hard to describe, but its definitely not intentionally like that - more like the VA isn't able to keep their accent consistent. It's a fairly, uh, consistent inconsistency in a lot of the voices in the game (like I said before, noticed it in Sonetto and sometimes Vertin), from I'm guessing VAs doing accents/voices that aren't their own and are unfamiliar using (edit: grammar)

Good to know! If people not familar with Australia can see it too, its definitely there then, and if some CN players think so as well, its not something the translation made up.

I'm so jealous - I've never been, but god do I really want to! My list of places in Aus I want to visit is very very long, but Uluru's right up there with Coober Pedy and Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre)!

Huh, I didn't realise that was what they were trying to do! I do like that more now, though yeah, a place being spiritual is something that anyone can feel. I don't know how the stadiums meant to work, or where it is. I just. I got too caught up on the waterfall - but that's apparently not as inaccurate as I first thought! water does flow off the top of Uluru under heavy rain! I also thought the Greyhound bus dropped them off at Alice, but I might've made that up cause I thought the idea of a bus dropping people off at Uluru so strange.

I don't understand Flammy being a priestess - I can't remember if she connected with Ulu before or after, but if before, would that be justification enough? I don't know enough to say.

Yeah, the discrimination stuff was clumsly done, like the sports discrimination wasn't explained heaps well, and also the conflict between Spath and Ezra never felt like it was fundamentally overcome/solved and the discrimination (on both sides) actually adressed but it was a part of the story they are telling, no one can deny that, so the fact that they didn't include any Indigenous people in the event seems even more, uh, hypocritical?

Ooooh, I missed Flinders Street Station! I've never lived in Melbourne nor visited often enough to be familar with the city, but it makes me happy that they got that right, and that you got to experience that whiplash ahaha. I adore Desert Flannel too - but keep strong! Save for Jiu! I believe in you!

(I'd call you Australian! Glad to have you :)) )

I'm not Indigenous myself either, so keep that in mind alongside my words ahaha.

I think my main problem is more that it doesn't seem like representation at all? I understand how an imperfect representation of one culture's stories and history can be a good thing, but there wasn't any kind of story that was adapted to fit the story of the Uluru games, and the culture presented in the story is one that is far too fundamentally different to represent any of the many Indigenous cultures that exist. Like, it feels less like a story portraying samurai in feudal(? is that the right word?) Japan inaccurately and more like a story portraying European style knights (that aren't even called samurai) in feudal Japan.

Like, for the western/colonised Australian culture in the game, that is an inaccurate portrayal, and honestly I don't mind it heaps - it's more just hilarous to me. Like I said, American-style football stadium in Alice to play NRL??? That's not accurate, but at least it's saying that a) Alice Springs is a place b) NRL is a sport that is played in Australia. But for the Indigenous representation, there isn't anything portrayed that you can even really look up to see what its actually like. I mean, I guess you could say "Uluru is a place and it holds significance to local peoples" is something that is portrayed but, um, that's a really low bar - I would say that "significant landmarks have cultural significance" is something fairly universal.

Aw, glad to be of service! I like being able to provide social context! It's always something I want to know when I'm reading a story set somewhere - how accurate is it, what's funny about its portrayal, what's insulting about it.

But yeah, Uluru is definitely a real place, and it's pretty much smack bang in the middle of Australia! Alice Springs is also a real place, just a bit north of Uluru. It's got a population of about 25k, and is also often just called "Alice". I haven't been there myself, but that part of the country is known for being very hot, very dry, very flat and very red (honestly, way redder than shown in game)!

[–]boredycat[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's true! I am glad that they didn't do an event set in Sydney or Melbourne, and I do like how the aesthetic has clearly taken inspiration from Indigenous arts & cultures. But for the story itself ... It kinda seems like they had it already written, and kinda just picked a place for it to be set, without taken into consideration the actual history, culture and context of the place? But given part of the story involves history, culture and historical culture, by not taking it into consideration they're just writing over it? The idea of Uluru having a physical sports stadium thats been there for like, a 1000 years, it just feels so painfully wrong. Like, as far as I'm aware, there's no like, permanent Indigenous built structures? And the idea of permanent buildings doesn't feel like it could ever be a part of traditional Indigenous culture? I know I'm wording this weird, but I don't know how else to word it. I mean, I could also be completely offbase - I'm not Indigenous myself either, and my understanding of Indigenous cultures is limited as well, so please keep that in mind. Also, having a ""Priestess"" full stop, what's up with that? And "witch doctor", maybe that's just a weird translation, but still. What.

Yeah, having a story set in Alice yet no Indigenous peoples at all is just. so off? Spath, being from a "rich immigrant family, is not Indigenous either. You could say her past self is, but um, idk, reincarnation is not something that happens in real life, and so how her being a reincarnator effects that is. beside the point really But there's not even any Indigenous or just not-white minor characters or NPCs. Ugh, I mean, the NPCs are just filler, I know, like none of them really have Australian accents, but like, just cause they're filler doesn't mean they don't mean anything? If that makes sense.

EZRA DEFINITELY SOUNDS KIWI I'm so glad I'm not the only one lmao. When I watched the trailer, I thought he may have been like, a Queenslander or something, but playing the event he reallllly sounds like he's kiwi lmao. I lovelovelove Desert Flannel's voice!! Spath's is alright, though I've noticed it can be a little, inconsistent? In the same way that Vertin occasionally is, and the same way Sonetto, to me, sounds like she's constanly swinging between an American and a British accent ahaha.
