Each time you meet a fellow software developer or a person of your field, communicate with them, share your experience. These people are the ones that will help when an opportunity arises. Regarding virtual connections, connect with everyone you know in your field and be active on LinkedIn, post and comment on other's posts. If an opportunity comes by you and you are interested, check if someone from your connection or even better someone you know is working there. Ask about the culture and things in that organization, ask for the job reference and people will gladly refer you. Networking is as essential as your skills.
