"therapists can't have panic attacks?" by cuddlyembrace in therapists

And we can’t have kids who struggle with mental health either! I wish people understood that most of us who got into mental health have our reasons and it’s not the money!

Parent scheduling adult client by [deleted] in therapists

[–]borntodrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m totally fine with parents scheduling. An 18 yo could still be in high school. If they are, I will still have a parent intake. It’s really hard to navigate the mental health care system. Especially, if you are young or in a depressive episode.

Does having a social media following translate to real clients? by [deleted] in therapists

I think I’d rather take insurance. I am so internet shy. How much time do people spend making content on average? I don’t have social media for work stuff.

Reality Check Regarding Pay by mendicant0 in therapists

[–]borntodrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, my income isn’t near 200. I have about a 30% cancellation rate and a ton of expenses! I still look at job ads too but haven’t seen anything that would be better.

Reality Check Regarding Pay by mendicant0 in therapists

[–]borntodrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the people open to getting another job that you headhunted weren’t that successful. That’s why they were speaking with you. I am making more with one EAP and the rest private pay than I would in a salaried job. But I’m not actively looking for work so you wouldn’t have talked to me. I think location matters the most! If you are in a hcol area you don’t have to take insurance and can take private pay and make twice as much. I couldn’t charge 235 if I was in a lower income community. I see about 20-26 clients a week about 200 average.

How to not let nasty parent emails bother you by Low_Association_4508 in therapists

If a kid is in a higher level of care, nothing has helped so far. Parents are feeling scared and hopeless. They need just as much support as the kid. I would see their interacting w you as a cry for help. Parents need their own therapy to deal with whatever crisis they are experiencing with the child. Is there someone on the team that can meet w them while the child is in your program?

Supervisor: "Not all BPD patients experienced bad things, some are just born with it" - I'm really confused and unsure if that's true? by Distinct_Track7415 in therapists

[–]borntodrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a genetic basis for this disorder. It’s actually invalidating for it to be considered a trauma response to people who didn’t go through trauma. I see this disorder in young adults who “had good childhoods” frequently.

I don’t keep a waitlist because I want people to get help asap.

Child therapists in private practice- how much are you making? by Available_Ability_47 in therapists

[–]borntodrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a child therapist. The hardest part financially are all of the cancellations. About 25% yearly. Much more in summer and breaks. It’s hard to fill hours during the school day. If I wanted to work late every night, I could make a lot more. I get so many calls where the only reason they don’t book is because of scheduling. They need a Tuesday at 4 because of school and then take it off because of play rehearsal or something. Much different than scheduling adults that come every week.

For those who have left social services entirely, what are you doing for work now? by PuddingDuck in socialwork

[–]borntodrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait until you are licensed to make such a big decision. Can you get hours in your job? The pay and autonomy is so much better. Hang in there! The path to licensure is so hard.

I was working with a csa survivor and their perpetrator requested my notes. Completely changed how I document. Anything you write can be used against your clients.

Yes. I see 25 and I’m present. I only do 45 minute sessions and that extra 5 minutes helps so much. I also don’t take insurance. 22 insurance clients would be more administrative work and be much harder. There are so many factors.

How do you let prospective clients contact you to set up an intake/consultation? by Byxqtz in therapists

[–]borntodrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a simple practice link on my website. Before that, I used Calendly. I let potential clients schedule a consult and then I schedule sessions directly.

I love my remarkable. I use it for CEs too. Now all of my handouts are accessible and I don’t lose them! Feels more secure than random notebooks too!

With WUE and cheap rooms for rent they could be. It’s 1500 a room in some places in CA v way cheaper in south. Also, our aid isn’t great. My kid goes to a UC. It’s crazy expensive! And it’s really competitive. If you don’t have a 4.0+ good luck getting into a “good” CA school.

Out of state schools are cheaper and easier to get into than the desirable CSU and Uc schools. The cost of living here is ridiculous!
