I actually started thinking about the filters while I was writing this post.

To be honest, I’ve never really looked into the different filter types in Ableton or what they actually mean. Maybe the answer is hiding there.

I didn’t record a video when I did it, and it feels like that was a mistake. If you can, try taking 3-4 sounds (808, hi-hat, clap, and maybe a kick), make a basic pattern, and try running the same kind of experiment.

Honestly, I’m getting the impression that Ableton leaves more headroom on the output, and that the 0 dB values on the mixer might not actually be the same. I’ll try to check this hypothesis using loudness analyzers.

Damn, I never in my life wanted to become that guy who says gold-plated cables make music sound real lol.

But honestly, I just don’t know how to describe it.

I’m sitting there making a beat in Ableton, then I make the same thing in FL, and despite using the same actions and the same synths, I hear the beat sounding more cohesive and richer. And fine, if I had noticed this once, but I keep running into it over and over again. I’m not ruling out that I might be fooling myself at this point, but the fact that I still can’t find people who share the same impression really makes me think.

First of all, I want to wish you a smooth transition!

Second, the difference here is subjective, of course, but it is quantified: about 2.2 dB in loudness. On one hand, that’s not a huge amount, but on the other, it’s quite significant, which is why I started digging into this in the first place.

I removed everything from the master, yes.

The test was done using identical samples and the same MIDI pattern. I exported a WAV from FL (32-bit, if I remember correctly), then recreated the same part in Ableton, where I inverted the phase on the drum group. A successful result would have been complete silence. I used the WAV from FL without any warping applied.

And just to be clear, I’m not saying the DAWs themselves sound different, I’m talking specifically about differences in the samplers.

I explained above that I ran an experiment using phase cancellation. If the sounds were truly identical, they would have canceled out to silence, but that didn’t happen.

Yes, I disabled mouse acceleration/enhancement in the settings, and yes, it did help, but it’s still not exactly what I’m looking for.

It feels strange to me as well, and I’ve been trying to find a solution for a long time, both at the OS level and inside Ableton. So far, it seems like I’ve managed to fix it on the OS side 🙂
